BSF Constable News: BSF Constable Purnima Kumar has finally returned home. Pakistan returned him to India after approximately 20 days. On Tuesday morning at 10:30 AM, Pakistani Rangers handed Purnima Kumar over to Indian officials at the Attari-Wagah border. This incident offered a glimpse of humanity amidst heightened tensions between the two countries.
How did Purnima Kumar reach Pakistan?
Purnima Kumar was stationed in the Firozpur sector of Punjab. During a patrol, he accidentally crossed the international border. He was subsequently detained by the Pakistan Rangers. At the time of this incident, the atmosphere was highly tense due to Operation Sindhur between India and Pakistan.
India had carried out precise strikes on terrorist bases on May 7th, prompting retaliatory action from Pakistan. This further heightened the anxiety of Purnima Kumar's family.
Family's Hopes and Struggles
Purnima Kumar's wife, Rajni, consistently raised her voice, expressing hope that the Indian government would raise the matter in talks at the DGMO level. Rajni mentioned that when the Indian army apprehended a Pakistani Ranger in Rajasthan, it renewed her hope for her husband's return.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also called Rajni, assuring her of all possible assistance and promising support for her in-laws' healthcare.
Rising Tensions between India and Pakistan
On April 22, 2025, a terrorist attack occurred in Pulwama, where Pakistan-sponsored terrorists attacked innocent civilians. This attack was considered the largest terrorist attack since the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
In response, India launched Operation Sindhur on May 7th, in which the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy jointly destroyed terrorist bases in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Pakistan's Retaliation
Following Operation Sindhur, Pakistan launched drone and missile attacks on 15 military installations in India, including Srinagar, Pathankot, and Amritsar, on the night of May 7-8. However, the coordinated efforts of the Indian Army thwarted these attacks.
The Indian Navy, utilizing its Carrier Battle Group and advanced air defense systems, intercepted Pakistan's air strikes at sea. This clearly conveyed that India would not compromise on its security.
