Cabinet Meeting Commemorates 50th Anniversary of India's Emergency

On the 50th Anniversary of the Emergency, Cabinet Meeting Led by Prime Minister Modi

New Delhi: The announcement of the Emergency, which completed 50 years, was commemorated with a significant meeting of the Central Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting paid tribute to those who opposed the 1975 Emergency and reaffirmed a commitment to honoring their sacrifices, resisting the attempt to suppress the spirit of the Constitution.

Silence and Remembrance

To begin the meeting, a two-minute silence was observed in memory of the countless individuals who fought to defend democracy during the dark days of the Emergency. Ministers acknowledged that during the Emergency, citizens’ fundamental rights were curtailed, and they experienced severe mental and social repression.

Resolution Reaffirming Trust in Democratic Values

A formal resolution was passed during the meeting, pledging to remember all those who struggled to protect the core spirit of the Constitution. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav read the resolution, which included a detailed account of the repression during the Emergency.

Reference to Nav Nirman Andolan and Sarejate Rajanoyi

The resolution also stated that the suppression of the 1974 Nav Nirman Andolan and JP (Jay Prakash Narayan)’s Sarejate Rajanoyi – the movements aimed at social reform – was a precursor to the imposition of the Emergency. The government condemned efforts to stifle public voices and disrupt democratic processes.

Attack on Federalism and Individual Liberty

Ashwini Vaishnav stated that during the Emergency, federalism was weakened, and individual liberties were suspended. This was a period in India’s constitutional history when attempts were made to dismantle the balance between states and the central government.

Reiterating People’s Faith in the Indian Constitution

The cabinet meeting also reiterated the Indian people’s unwavering faith in the Constitution and democratic values. The government emphasized that despite attempts to challenge the Constitution in the past, the Indian people have consistently strengthened democracy each time.

The Emergency: India’s Most Challenging Period of Democracy

On June 25, 1975, then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared the Emergency. It was initially presented as a measure to address political instability, but it soon became evident that democratic institutions were being weakened to maintain power. Press freedom was curtailed, leaders were imprisoned, and pressure was exerted on the judiciary.
