CBSE has changed the rules for additional subjects for 10th and 12th grades. Now, only 2 additional subjects can be chosen in 10th grade and 1 in 12th grade. School permission and continuous study for two years will be mandatory.
CBSE: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has implemented new rules regarding additional subjects for the 10th and 12th board examinations. Now, students will not be able to choose any additional subject without school permission. Only 2 additional subjects will be allowed in 10th grade and only 1 in 12th grade. Furthermore, the subjects chosen must be studied continuously for two years for students to be eligible to appear for the board examination in that subject.
New Rules for Choosing Additional Subjects
CBSE has issued clear guidelines for additional subjects. For Class 10 students, only two additional subjects are permitted in addition to the main five subjects. For Class 12, the facility to choose only one additional subject has been provided. This step has been taken with the objective of protecting students from excessive burden and enabling them to focus on their studies.
Students must also note that merely choosing a subject is not sufficient. The chosen additional subject must be studied for two consecutive years. This means that for Class 10, a student must study the same subject in both 9th and 10th grades. Similarly, for Class 12, attendance in that subject for both 11th and 12th grades will be mandatory.
School Approval and Facilities are Essential
CBSE has clarified that a school can offer an additional subject only if it has the Board's approval. Along with this, the school must have teachers, laboratories, and other necessary facilities for that subject. If a school has not obtained approval or does not have the required resources, students will not be able to choose that subject for the board examination. This rule guarantees the necessary resources for both students and schools.
Options for Compartment and Essential Repeat Students
If a student fails in an additional subject in their final year and is placed in the compartment or essential repeat category, they can reappear for the examination as a private candidate.
Private candidates are not required to be affiliated with any school. They can study at home and appear directly for the board examination. This option is beneficial for students who wish to get another chance and improve their performance in their subject.
Why This Change is Necessary
This new rule by CBSE makes students more responsible and keeps the selection of additional subjects under control. This will prevent students from participating in additional subjects without adequate preparation, thereby increasing the possibility of improvement in their performance in the board examinations.
