The Dalai Lama says he believes he will live for another 30-40 years. He affirmed the traditional process for selecting a successor and dismissed Chinese interference.
Dalai Lama Statement: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama clarified on Saturday that there is no need to rush the process of identifying his successor. He stated his belief that he will live for another 30 to 40 years, continuing to serve humanity during that time. He made this statement during a long-life prayer ceremony held at the main Dalai Lama temple (Tsuglagkhang) in McLeod Ganj, Dharamshala. The ceremony was organized to mark his 90th birthday.
"I am blessed by Avalokiteshvara"
During his speech, the Dalai Lama said he has received indications from many prophecies and experiences that he is blessed by Avalokiteshvara (the deity of compassion in Buddhism). He said that he has strived to serve people to the best of his ability and that everyone's prayers have proved beneficial for him.
He further stated that despite losing his homeland in Tibet, he has been able to benefit millions of people spiritually and humanely during his exile in India. He also clarified that he will continue on the path of human service and compassion for as long as possible.
Dalai Lama's clear stance on the selection of a successor
The Dalai Lama recently reiterated that the process of identifying his successor will be traditional and spiritual. He said that only the Ganden Phodrang Trust has the authority to recognize the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama.
Tibetan government's opposition to China's interference
Penpa Tsering, the head of the Tibetan government-in-exile, bly opposed China's stance. He clearly stated that the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama is not a political or governmental process, but a deep spiritual tradition. Only Buddhist traditions and beliefs will be given importance in this process. Penpa Tsering said that it is unimaginable that any government would decide where and when a spiritual guru will be born. This decision is based on the spiritual guru himself and his tradition.
