Dalai Lama: Disagreements have emerged between China and Tibet regarding the successor to the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. The Dalai Lama has clarified that the selection of his successor will follow Tibetan Buddhist traditions, without any involvement from China. However, China disagrees with this stance and has responded with b reactions.

Responsibility Assigned to the Gaden Phodrang Trust

The Dalai Lama has assigned full responsibility for selecting his successor to the Gaden Phodrang Trust. He stated that the entire process of identifying and recognizing the next Dalai Lama will be the sole right of the Gaden Phodrang Trust. This implies that there will be no external interference in the selection of the successor.

China's Strong Objections and Conditions

China appears displeased by the Dalai Lama's statement. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that the selection of the Dalai Lama's successor will be carried out in accordance with China's centuries-old traditions and religious rituals. She also stated that the successor must abide by Chinese laws and obtain approval from the Beijing government for their selection. The successor will not be recognized without China's approval.

China's Attempts at Control

China has long been attempting to establish control over Tibetan religious affairs. This has been China's policy regarding the Dalai Lama as well. The Beijing government considers the Dalai Lama a separatist, while he is regarded worldwide as a symbol of compassion and non-violence.

The Dalai Lama in Exile in India since 1959

In 1959, after the uprising against Chinese rule in Lhasa, the Dalai Lama came to India. Since then, he has been living in exile in India, along with thousands of Tibetans who have settled here. Meanwhile, China has repeatedly labeled him a traitor and separatist, while the international community sees him as a symbol of peace and humanity.
