Delhi Metro fare increased after 8 years. DMRC decided to implement an increase of ₹1 to ₹4 based on distance and up to ₹5 on the Airport Express Line, effective from August 25, 2025.
Delhi Metro Fare Hike: Delhi Metro is a lifeline for millions of commuters in Delhi and the NCR. Millions of people travel by Delhi Metro daily as it is a fast, safe, and time-saving mode of transport. However, passengers will now have to spend a little more on their journeys. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced a hike in metro fares after eight years.
This increase has come into effect from August 25, 2025. This decision by DMRC will directly impact all metro commuters, as they will now have to pay ₹1 to ₹4 more per trip, depending on the distance traveled on each line. Furthermore, an additional fare of up to ₹5 has been fixed for the Airport Express Line.
Why Metro Fare Increased After Eight Years
The Delhi Metro fare was last increased in the year 2017. Since then, the metro fare had remained stable. After no changes in fares for eight years, DMRC has stated that this increase was necessary due to rising costs of maintenance, electricity, employee salaries, and infrastructure. Electricity is one of the biggest costs for Delhi Metro, and its rates have increased several times over time. In addition, the cost of maintaining metro stations, coaches, and technical services has also been continuously increasing. The decision to increase fares was taken due to all these reasons.
According to DMRC officials, the increase has been kept very minimal so that it does not burden the passengers too much. Passengers traveling short distances will have to pay only ₹1 more, while passengers traveling longer distances will have to pay up to ₹4 extra.
New Fare Rates Effective from August 25, 2025
DMRC has also released a list of the new fare rates, which have become effective from August 25, 2025. According to the new fare rates, the fare for the shortest distance, i.e., 0 to 2 kilometers, in Delhi Metro will now be ₹11. There has been no change in the fare for this distance.
However, passengers traveling 2 to 5 kilometers will now have to pay ₹21. Similarly, the fare will be ₹32 for traveling 5 to 12 kilometers, ₹43 for traveling 12 to 21 kilometers, ₹54 for traveling 21 to 32 kilometers, and ₹64 for those traveling more than 32 kilometers.
Some concessions have been kept for passengers on Sundays and national holidays. On these days, fares have been reduced for certain distances to provide some relief to passengers traveling on holidays.
Fare Hiked on Airport Express Line Too
The Delhi Metro's Airport Express Line is extremely convenient for residents of the capital and travelers because it provides fast and direct connectivity. The fare on this line was already higher compared to other lines. Now, it has also been increased by up to ₹5. For example, where one had to pay ₹60 for long-distance travel on the Airport Express Line earlier, one will now have to pay ₹64 for it.
Direct Impact on Passengers
Millions of people travel by Delhi Metro every day. These include working people, students, tourists, and traders. The fare increase will directly affect their pockets, especially those who travel long distances daily. However, DMRC says that this increase is very minimal and has been determined according to the distance so that passengers are not burdened too much.
For the convenience of passengers, DMRC has also said that passengers will continue to get a discount of up to 10 percent on traveling with a metro card, as before. This means that passengers traveling with a metro card will feel the impact of the fare hike somewhat less.
Delhi Metro Network
Delhi Metro is known as the lifeline of Delhi and NCR. Its total length is 394 kilometers and it includes 12 lines and 289 stations. The Delhi Metro has greatly reduced the traffic problem in the capital and has given people the option of fast, safe, and environmentally friendly travel.
Delhi Metro connects not only Delhi but also cities like Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad, and Faridabad. Millions of people use the metro daily to travel between these cities. In such a situation, the fare hike will also affect the passengers of NCR.
