India’s former Army Chief General (Retd) Manoj Mukund Naravane’s forthcoming book “Four Stars of Destiny” has triggered a controversy ahead of its official release following reports that an alleged pre-print PDF version has been leaked online. The Delhi Police Special Cell has registered a case and initiated an investigation into how the material entered the public domain without mandatory governmental and military clearances.
According to Delhi Police, complaints were received across multiple social media platforms, online forums, and digital channels alleging that a typeset PDF copy of the book was being widely circulated. The document is stated to be a pre-publication version. Investigators have found that complete or partial PDF copies of the book were accessible on certain websites, while some e-commerce and online marketing platforms displayed the final book cover in a manner suggesting readiness for sale, raising concerns of unauthorised leakage or commercial use.
Under existing norms in India, publications by senior serving or retired military officers based on official service experiences require prior approval from the Ministry of Defence and relevant authorities to safeguard national security, sensitive information, and diplomatic interests. Police officials stated that “Four Stars of Destiny” had not received final publication clearance at the time its digital version was allegedly circulated.

The Special Cell has filed a case against unknown persons and commenced a probe with cyber experts to determine the origin of the initial upload, assess whether the material was leaked from a publisher, printing press, or internal source, and examine the legal authorisation of platforms claiming to sell the book. Police indicated that publishers, distributors, and associated digital platforms may be questioned if required.
The controversy has also acquired a political dimension after the book was referenced during the recent Budget Session of Parliament. During the discussion on the motion of thanks to the President’s address in the Lok Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi cited a magazine article purportedly based on the book.
Rahul Gandhi claimed that the book contains accounts related to the 2020 Ladakh standoff, including Galwan and Doklam, and aspects of the Agnipath scheme that appear to differ from the government’s stated position.
