In the Durgapur rape case, Rozina, the sister of prime accused Safiq, assisted the police in his arrest. Now, all five accused, including the prime suspect, are in custody, and the police are engaged in completing the judicial process.
Kolkata: All accused in the gang rape incident involving a student of a private medical college in Durgapur, West Bengal, are now in police custody. Prime accused Safiq S.K. and another accused, Nasiruddin S.K., were arrested early Monday morning. Previously, the other three accused - Riyazuddin, Appu Barui, and Firdaus S.K. - had been arrested on Sunday.
Asansol-Durgapur DCP Abhishek Gupta stated that Safiq's sister, Rozina S.K., helped the police apprehend her absconding brother. She wanted her brother to face punishment according to the law and to save her family from disrepute.
Rape Incident with Medical Student
The 23-year-old medical student had gone out for dinner with a classmate on Friday evening. Shortly after, the alleged gang rape incident occurred in a secluded area near the medical college campus. This incident has caused significant political and social stir throughout Durgapur.
Durgapur Police Commissioner Sunil Choudhary assured that all accused would soon be brought to justice. He stated that ensuring justice for the victim and her family is a priority.
Safiq's Arrest in Durgapur
Rozina stated that the police team reached the spot under the Andal Bridge in Durgapur where her brother had come to meet her. The police surrounded him and arrested him. Rozina said, “Safiq surrendered and will now face the law. Our priority is to ensure self-respect and justice.”
This incident has raised serious questions about safety and women's security in the area. Police reported that Safiq's and Nasiruddin's bikes were used by the accused to escape.
Safiq's Family and Their Situation
Rozina said that her brother Safiq works at a rolling mill factory in Durgapur and has a son and a daughter. She mentioned that the family is poor but values self-respect. She wishes that Safiq receives punishment if found guilty and is released if innocent.
Safiq and Nasiruddin were produced before the court of Durgapur Judicial Magistrate Rajeev Sarkar. The Durgapur Bar Association decided that no member lawyer would represent the accused.
Police Legal Proceedings Continue
Police stated that DNA profiling of the accused and examination of samples collected during the victim's medico-legal examination would be conducted with court permission. Once the victim is ready, her statement will be recorded before a judicial magistrate, and an identification parade will be organized. All accused in this case are now in nine-day police custody, and the investigation is ongoing.
