Chithawa: The Chithawa police have taken a new turn in the Sangeeta murder case from Lalas village in Rajasthan. After the arrest of the main accused and the deceased's husband, Subhash, the police have now taken her father-in-law, Gopalram, into custody. Meanwhile, protests against dowry death in the case continue outside the police station for the third day. Relatives and villagers are putting pressure on the police administration to demand justice in the matter.
Dowry Harassment Began After Marriage
Sangeeta was married to Subhash, son of Gopalram, on January 17, 2019. Immediately after the marriage, the in-laws began demanding Rs 5 lakh and a four-wheeler as dowry. The family alleges that the husband Subhash, mother-in-law Santosh Devi, and sister-in-law Sarita continuously subjected Sangeeta to mental and physical torture.
Sangeeta was constantly pressured since her marriage. According to the report, Subhash would beat her, abuse her, and threaten to kill her if the dowry demand was not met. Sometimes, she was also threatened with divorce and remarriage. This harassment made Sangeeta's life difficult and unbearable.
Arrest of Murder Accused
On the night of August 20, the family received information that Sangeeta had died. When the relatives reached the in-laws' house, they found Sangeeta's body lying in a bajra field. It is alleged that the in-laws staged a hanging to make it look like a suicide. On the report of the incident, the police registered a case under Section 304B (dowry death) and began an investigation.
Husband Subhash had already been arrested in this case. Now, the police have also taken father-in-law Gopalram into custody. The police are intensifying the investigation and trying to ascertain who else was involved in the murder. Interrogation of the arrested accused is ongoing.
Protests in Demand for Justice
The protest outside the Chithawa police station in demand for justice in the case continued for the third day. A large number of villagers, relatives, and youth leaders were present at the protest site. Former MLA Mahendra Chaudhary visited the protest site on Monday, and youth leader Ramniwas Poshak on Tuesday, addressing the public.
