World's Oldest Marathon Runner Fauja Singh Dies in Road Accident

The world's oldest marathon runner, 114-year-old Fauja Singh, sadly passed away on Monday evening in a road accident. Fauja Singh was known worldwide for his long life and amazing fitness.

Jalandhar: Fauja Singh, the world's oldest marathon runner, died in a road accident on Monday. He was 114 years old. His death has brought sorrow not only to India but also to his millions of fans around the world. After the accident, which occurred in Beas Pind, Jalandhar district, Punjab, the family said that Fauja Singh's funeral would be held only after relatives arrived from England and Canada. Therefore, the cremation may take two or three days.

How did the accident happen?

The incident occurred on Monday afternoon. Fauja Singh had gone out for a walk near his village, Beas Pind, on the Pathankot-Jalandhar National Highway. While he was crossing the road, a speeding car hit him. He was rushed to the hospital immediately after the accident, but doctors declared him dead. Fauja Singh's son, Sukhwinder Singh, said that several members of the family live in England and Canada.

They have now left for India. The post-mortem and cremation process will be completed after their arrival. It is estimated that the cremation will take place by Friday.

Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria expressed deep sorrow over Fauja Singh's death. He said, "I am deeply saddened by the passing of Sardar Fauja Singh, the great marathon runner and a lasting symbol of perseverance and hope. Even at the age of 114, he continued to inspire generations with his strength and commitment. I had the privilege of visiting his village in Jalandhar in December 2024 and walking with him. That campaign gained new energy in his presence. I express my deepest condolences to his family."

Fauja Singh's life: An inspiring story of defying age

Fauja Singh was born on April 1, 1911, in Beas Pind, Punjab. He started running at the age of 89 after his retirement and showed the world that age is no barrier with hard work and b willpower. He participated in international races like the London Marathon, New York Marathon, and Toronto World Marathon. He was the first runner in the world to complete a marathon at the age of 100.

Fauja Singh always said that a simple life, a pure diet, and positive thinking were the secrets of his longevity and fitness. He was a vegetarian and a supporter of a completely drug-free lifestyle.
