A fire in a four-storey building in Sadh Nagar in the Palam area of southwest New Delhi on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of five members of a single family, while three others sustained serious injuries.
According to available information, a total of nine members of the same family were inside the building when the fire broke out, and all were trapped as it spread. Multiple units of the Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Police and ambulances reached the site after being alerted. Firefighters brought the blaze under control after sustained efforts and carried out rescue operations to evacuate those trapped.
Rescue Operations Face Access Constraints
Firefighters and police personnel initiated rescue efforts immediately upon arrival and attempted to evacuate occupants from the building. Officials from the fire department stated that rescue operations were hindered by the building’s location in a narrow lane. Several ambulances had to be stationed at a distance from the site due to congestion and limited access for vehicles.

Three injured individuals have been admitted to Divya Prastha Hospital, where doctors described their condition as serious but stable. Hospital authorities stated that treatment is being provided for smoke inhalation and burn injuries. Officials said three ambulances reached the spot promptly, while additional ambulances were positioned in nearby areas for immediate use if required.
Fire Originated in One Section of Building
Preliminary information indicates that the fire started in one part of the four-storey building and spread throughout within minutes. Dense smoke prevented occupants from escaping. Firefighters managed to control the blaze after considerable effort, but significant damage had already occurred. Local residents reported that panic spread in the area following the incident, and nearby people assisted in the rescue efforts.
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Police and fire department teams have begun inspecting the site. Officials stated that possible causes, including a short circuit, gas cylinder, or other technical factors, are under investigation. A final determination will be made after the inquiry is completed, including whether safety regulations were followed in the building.
