Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax shot and killed his wife, Dr. Serena Fairfax, before taking his own life at their home amid an ongoing divorce process, police said.
According to police, the incident occurred at the couple’s residence, where Justin Fairfax first shot his wife in the basement and then went upstairs to a bedroom and shot himself. Both were pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have classified the case as a murder-suicide and said a detailed investigation is ongoing. Their son alerted emergency services by calling 911, and both children were present in the house at the time.
Reports indicate that Justin Fairfax and Dr. Serena Fairfax had been experiencing prolonged marital conflict. The couple had been living separately for approximately two years while continuing to reside in the same house with their children. Dr. Serena Fairfax had filed for divorce, which further intensified the dispute.
Court documents indicated that Justin Fairfax was under significant mental stress. Records noted behavioral concerns including isolation, alcohol dependence, and estrangement from family members, which contributed to the complexity of the situation.
Justin Fairfax was previously regarded as an emerging figure in the Democratic Party. He won the lieutenant governor election in 2017 and was considered a potential candidate for governor in 2019.
However, his political career was impacted when two women accused him of sexual misconduct. Following these allegations, his position within the party weakened, and he was defeated in the 2021 gubernatorial election. These developments affected both his personal and political life.
