Ganesh Chaturthi 2025: The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is being celebrated across the country on August 27, 2025. The auspicious time for the installation of Lord Ganesha on this day is from 11:05 AM to 1:39 PM. Devotees establish Ganpati Bappa in their homes and serve him for 1, 3, 5, 7, or 10 days. Most people perform the immersion on the tenth day, Anant Chaturdashi, which, according to mythological accounts, is to balance the body heat of Lord Ganesha and is in accordance with religious customs.
Worship Method
A special worship method is followed during the installation of the idol on Ganesh Chaturthi. The idol of Lord Ganesha is installed in the morning during the auspicious time. Devotees perform devotional songs, chanting, and aarti daily. Ganpati Bappa is served through the night with vigils. Modak, laddus, and fruits are offered during worship.
Installation and Initial Worship
On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, Ganpati Bappa is installed in homes and pandals. After the installation, devotees serve and worship Lord Ganesha. Ganpati is worshipped daily through devotional songs, chanting, and aarti. During this time, devotees stay with the decorated idol, which symbolizes him, throughout the day and serve him.
The Ganesh Chaturthi festival generally lasts for ten days. However, some people perform the immersion earlier according to their convenience and time. Some devotees immerse Lord Ganesha on the one and a half, third, fifth, seventh, or eleventh day. Public celebrations involve the continuous worship of Ganpati Bappa for ten days.
Immersion after One and a Half or Three Days
Many devotees worship Ganpati for only two to three days and then immerse the idol. The aim is to complete the devotion to Lord Ganesha in a shorter period and maintain balance in their daily routine. Serving Lord Ganesha at home is akin to welcoming a guest. Bidding farewell to Lord Ganesha after serving him like a guest is part of the tradition.
Immersion on Panchami and the Fifth Day
Some devotees also perform Ganesh immersion on the fifth day. However, according to scriptures, Ganesh immersion should not be done on the Panchami tithi. The Panchami tithi is considered dedicated to Skandamata. Mother Parvati is also called Goddess Skandamata, and on this day, Lord Ganesha is worshipped along with Lord Kartikeya. Therefore, bidding farewell to Lord Ganesha on the Panchami tithi is not considered scripturally appropriate.
Significance of Anant Chaturdashi
According to traditions, the immersion of Lord Ganesha is performed on the day of Anant Chaturdashi. According to a mythological story, Lord Ganesha's body temperature increased due to writing the Mahabharata for ten days. As his body became very hot, Ved Vyas requested him to bathe in a lake. After this, Lord Ganesha took a dip in the water on Anant Chaturdashi. Following this tradition, Ganesh immersion is performed every year on Anant Chaturdashi.
According to religious scholars, Lord Ganesha sometimes visits his elder brother Kartikeya. He stays there for ten days and then returns to his abode. During this time, devotees bid him farewell and request him to return. For this reason, the timing and rituals of Ganesh immersion hold special significance.
