Google has added a new image verification feature to the Gemini app, which uses SynthID technology to identify whether an image was created by Google AI. This tool can instantly trace images containing invisible watermarks, making it easier to verify fake images online.
AI Image Verification: Google has launched a new image verification feature in its Gemini app, introduced to address the rapidly growing problem of fake images. This feature is based on the company's SynthID technology and currently only identifies images created by Google AI. Users can upload any suspicious photo to the app and ask if it is real or AI-generated, and the system provides a clear answer within seconds. This significantly simplifies the verification of suspicious images spreading on social media and messaging platforms.
Image Verification Feature Arrives in Gemini
Google's new feature is available with the Gemini 3-powered Nano Banana Pro model. Its function is to identify the SynthID watermarks embedded within images. These markers are invisible in the photo and do not alter the image quality, but the system analyzes them to instantly determine whether an image was created by Google AI.
According to the company, over 20 billion AI-generated images have been marked with SynthID since 2023. This makes a large number of images circulating online easier to identify with this new system. However, Gemini can currently only detect images created by Google AI.

How to Check if a Photo is Real or AI-Generated?
To use this feature, users simply need to upload the image to Gemini. Then, ask questions such as “Is this photo AI-generated?” or “Was this created by Google AI?” The app finds the SynthID markers and provides a clear answer within seconds. This simplifies the verification of suspicious images encountered on social media or messaging apps.
AI image technology has become so advanced that distinguishing between real and fake is challenging. For this reason, this method offers users a reliable verification option, especially for images where discerning the truth by visual inspection alone is not possible.
Why This Security Feature Has Become Essential
The proliferation of AI images in social media, messaging platforms, and web content is rapidly increasing. Often, AI images shared out of context can create confusion. In such a scenario, Google's tool will help users identify fake images, at least those created with its own technology.
While it cannot track images from every AI tool, it is a significant step forward in digital verification. This makes it easier to understand and evaluate visual information found on the internet.
