Hydrogen-Powered Train Planned for Gorakhpur-Varanasi Route

A hydrogen-powered train is set to run between Gorakhpur and Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, promoting clean transportation and reducing pollution. IIT-BHU leads the research.

Varanasi. Preparations are underway to operate a hydrogen-powered train between Gorakhpur and Varanasi, with the aim of promoting clean and modern transportation in the Purvanchal region. IIT-BHU has been selected as the leading research institute for this ambitious project. Furthermore, a proposal has been made to establish a "Green Hydrogen Centre of Excellence" to work on green hydrogen technology.

The train will be powered by hydrogen fuel cell technology, which will significantly reduce pollution. Under the plan, preparations are also being made to operate hydrogen buses along with the hydrogen train on this route. The project aims to promote green mobility in Uttar Pradesh and make the transportation system environmentally friendly.

This project is being expedited under the state's Green Hydrogen Policy 2024. IIT-BHU and MMMUT in Gorakhpur will work together for research, technological development, storage, fuel supply, and infrastructure development. The participation of both institutions will enable the development of new technologies related to hydrogen energy in this field.

According to officials, the necessary infrastructure for the hydrogen train, such as refueling stations, safety standards, and technical testing, will be developed in a phased manner. Upon completion, the project will be a significant achievement for the country's green transport sector.

Currently, detailed studies are underway on the route map, train design, and technical processes. It is expected that the Gorakhpur-Varanasi hydrogen train will usher in a new era of clean energy-based transportation in the state in the coming times.
