Great Nicobar Project 2025: The Great Nicobar Project is one of India's most ambitious infrastructure undertakings. The project was proposed by NITI Aayog in 2021. Situated at the southern tip of the Nicobar Islands, the estimated cost for its completion is approximately ₹72,000 crore, with a project timeline of 30 years. Its objective is to transform the island into a hub for global trade, transportation, and tourism. This entails the development of various facilities, including a port, airport, and township.
Port and Airport Development
Under this project, an international container transshipment terminal will be constructed at Galathea Bay, which will bolster global trade routes. Additionally, an international airport will be built, enhancing the island's connectivity. Township development will involve the creation of residential, commercial, and institutional sectors to accommodate approximately 3-4 lakh people, incorporating modern amenities akin to a smart city. A solar plant will also be established to provide green energy.
Work Completed So Far
The project is progressing in phases. In April 2025, NTPC invited bids for the solar energy project. Galathea Bay was declared a major port in September 2024. The counting and cutting of trees for township development are also underway. Environmental clearance was obtained in November 2022, and a fund of ₹80 crore has been allocated for project monitoring. Several companies have shown interest in this project, and phased development is ongoing.
Congress's Concerns
The Congress has criticized the central government over this project. Party leader Sonia Gandhi expressed concern in an article published in The Hindu, stating that the project poses a threat to the island's tribal communities and their existence. According to Sonia Gandhi, the project could also have a significant impact on the flora, fauna, and ecosystem. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and other Congress leaders have also cornered the government. Congress argues that it is inappropriate to proceed with the project without serious consideration of its strategy and environmental impacts.
BJP's Stance
BJP spokesperson Anil K. Antony retorted to the Congress, stating that the Great Nicobar Project is essential to strengthen India's strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific region. According to Anil, the Nicobar Islands are located less than 150 miles from Indonesia, near the western entrance of the Strait of Malacca. This area is one of the world's most critical maritime checkpoints. This project will enhance India's naval capabilities and power projection, providing critical assets for operations in the Indo-Pacific region.
