The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several states of North, South, and Northeast India for the next three days. The rain continues to wreak havoc from hilly areas to plains, causing many rivers and streams to overflow. This has led to flood-like situations, and people are facing severe difficulties.
Rain Havoc in North India
- Delhi-NCR: There is a possibility of light rain in the National Capital Delhi and the NCR region from the evening of August 5th. The Meteorological Department has predicted light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms from August 6th to 7th. Due to continuous rain, the water level of the Yamuna River is rising rapidly, reaching close to the danger mark.
- Uttar Pradesh: Heavy rainfall has continued in Uttar Pradesh for the past few days. Flood-like situations have arisen in districts such as Lucknow, Ayodhya, Bahraich, Kushinagar, and Barabanki. Very heavy rainfall is expected in eastern UP on August 5th, while a heavy rainfall alert has been issued for the entire state on August 6th.
- Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh: The situation is even more serious in the hilly states. Heavy rain is expected in the Terai and mountainous regions of Uttarakhand, while a warning of torrential rain has been issued in areas such as Shimla, Mandi, Sirmaur, Kullu, and Kanda in Himachal Pradesh. Landslides and road closures are already common occurrences.
Deteriorating Conditions in Bihar and Jharkhand
Heavy rainfall will continue in districts of Bihar such as Darbhanga, Sitamarhi, Samastipur, Purnia, and West Champaran for the next two days. Complaints of waterlogging and road blockages are continuously being received from these areas. Heavy rainfall is also expected in Jharkhand on August 7th and 8th. The state government has put the concerned districts on alert.
Strong Impact of Monsoon in South India
- Kerala and Tamil Nadu: The monsoon is also active in South India. The Meteorological Department has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in the valley regions of Kerala and Tamil Nadu on August 5th and 6th. Rain is likely to continue in these states for the next 5 days. The water level of rivers in Kerala is already elevated, and a red alert has been issued in several districts.
- Karnataka and Lakshadweep: There is also a possibility of high waves in the sea along the Karnataka coast and the Lakshadweep region from August 5th to 9th. Due to this, fishermen have been advised not to venture into the deep sea.
Heavy Rain Warning in Northeast India as well
Heavy rainfall is forecast in Arunachal Pradesh from August 5th, 7th to 10th. A special alert has been issued in districts such as Itanagar, Pasighat, and Tawang. Landslide and flood situations may arise in these areas.
