Himachal Pradesh has been declared a disaster-affected state from today. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu made this announcement in the Assembly. He stated that the monsoon became active again in the state from August 21, and since then, incidents such as heavy rainfall, cloudbursts, and landslides have occurred in various parts.
Shimla: Following the active monsoon and heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh since August 21, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has declared the state a disaster-affected region from today. In a statement made in the Assembly, the Chief Minister informed that the preliminary damage assessment in the state has been estimated at Rs 3,056 crore. The Chief Minister said that during this period, roads, bridges, and water and electricity infrastructure have suffered the most damage. Affected districts include Chamba, Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Mandi, Shimla, Kangra, and Hamirpur.
CM Sukhu's Warning on Unregulated Construction
CM Sukhu informed the Assembly that the state government has issued directives to district, state, and central government departments to undertake relief and rescue operations and the reconstruction of infrastructure on a war footing, in accordance with the provisions of the Disaster Management Act. He said, "There has been immense loss to homes, livestock, and agriculture in this disaster. Our government stands with our affected brothers and sisters during this difficult time. We are sparing no effort in rehabilitation and relief work.
The Chief Minister stated that the plight of all hill states, including Himachal, is a matter of national concern. He urged the central government to impose a ban on unregulated construction activities in hilly areas. The CM said, "Our mountains are not just tourist destinations; they are pillars of life-support. Hill regions are most affected by global warming. Awakening and action in time is the greatest need today."
