Hong Kong Fire: A massive fire in Hong Kong's Tai Po district has shaken the entire city. According to officials, the blaze in a high-rise apartment building has so far resulted in 44 deaths, while approximately 300 people remain missing. Given the severity of the incident, firefighters and emergency teams continued rescue operations tirelessly until morning, attempting to safely evacuate people from the burning building. The fire was so intense that it spread to seven of the eight towers in the Wang Fuk Court complex, creating extremely difficult conditions for local administration and the Fire Services Department.
How the Fire Spread in the Building
Officials reported that the fire initially ignited on the external scaffolding of a 32-storey tower and subsequently spread inside the building and to other surrounding structures. Strong winds caused the flames and thick smoke to spread rapidly, posing a severe danger to people. Of the deceased, 40 individuals were pronounced dead at the scene, while at least 62 others were injured. The majority of the injured suffered severe burns or injuries from smoke inhalation. This devastating fire has caused widespread panic among local residents, and hundreds of families have been moved to temporary shelters.

According to the Fire Services Department, the fire in four buildings was brought under control by Thursday morning, but rescue efforts remained extremely challenging. The Fire Chief stated that high temperatures and the rapidly spreading flames made it difficult for crews to operate. The fire had spread across bamboo scaffolding and the building's external netting, causing flames and smoke to rise.
Approximately 900 people were moved to temporary shelters. Hundreds of firefighters, police officers, and paramedics were deployed at the scene. Firefighters attempted to douse the flames at height using ladder trucks. The fire, which started in the afternoon, was elevated to a Level 5 alarm by night, signifying the highest level of severity.
Many Affected by the Disaster
The Wang Fuk Court complex, affected by the fire, comprised eight buildings with approximately 2,000 flats. These flats were home to about 4,800 residents, a majority of whom are elderly. The housing complex was built in the 1980s and had recently undergone extensive renovation. The fire incident has raised serious questions about the safety of people residing in the area. Officials stated that videos from the scene showed firefighters and rescue teams continuously working to evacuate people.

Chief Executive John Lee stated that the police and fire department have formed a special team to investigate the cause of the fire. Furthermore, three individuals have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder. The investigation will determine what caused the fire and whether any negligence or deliberate act was involved.
International Reaction
Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed condolences to the deceased firefighters and affected families. He stated that the severity of the fire has shaken everyone and urged the Hong Kong government to provide all possible assistance. Local authorities have housed affected individuals in temporary shelters, and relief efforts are ongoing. The enormity of the fire has caused concern not only in Hong Kong but also within the international community.
Concerns Over Building Safety
The use of bamboo scaffolding is common in building construction and renovation projects in Hong Kong. Officials stated that, due to safety concerns, the government had planned to gradually phase out bamboo scaffolding in public projects earlier this year. However, this incident has made it clear that there are serious deficiencies in safety standards in older constructions and renovations.
