Hyderabad Woman Accuses US Police Officer Husband of Harassment and Abandonment

Hana Ahmed Khan of Hyderabad has accused her husband, Mohammed Zainuddin, a US police officer, of physical and mental harassment. Her husband allegedly lured her to India under false pretenses, abandoned her in a hotel, and fled to the US with all her documents.

Hyderabad: A 25-year-old woman, Hana Ahmed Khan, has leveled serious allegations of mental and physical torture against her husband, Mohammed Zainuddin, a Chicago police officer in the US. Hana claims that after moving to the US two years into their marriage, her husband continuously tormented her and then tricked her into returning to India. In her distress, the woman has written to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, appealing for immediate intervention and assistance from the central government.

Hana's Exploitation by Husband in the US

Hana stated that her marriage (Nikah) took place on June 22, 2022, in Hyderabad. She did not immediately go to the US after the wedding, and for two years, her husband pressured her to join him. After completing the visa process, Hana departed for the US on February 17, 2024. Upon reaching Chicago, her husband continuously subjected her to mental and physical harassment.

The woman alleged that she was repeatedly threatened, emotionally abused, and on one occasion, she was beaten and injured. She called the police, but they only issued a warning and left. Hana said she tried everything to normalize the situation, but the abuse continued relentlessly.

Husband Lured Her to India, Abandoned Her, and Fled

Hana claimed that her husband seized several legal documents and personal belongings under the pretext of calling her to India. Her husband also sent her for an Umrah pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. Upon arriving in India, she was left at a hotel in Hyderabad. When Hana stepped out, the hotel management informed her that all her belongings, including her passport, Green Card, and jewelry, were missing. Following this, Zainuddin fled India.

In her letter to the External Affairs Minister, Hana stated that she wants to pursue legal action and retrieve all her documents so she can return to the US and fight her case against her husband.

Hana Seeks Help from Women's Commissions

Hana has also written to the Telangana State Commission for Women and the National Commission for Women, appealing for help. She informed them that her family had spent approximately ₹20 lakhs on the wedding and also given gold and expensive gifts as dowry. The woman also filed a complaint with the Hyderabad Police, but she has not yet received adequate assistance.

The woman states that she has been continuously struggling with this issue for the past four to five months and has no option left but to bring her plight to the attention of the External Affairs Minister.

US and Indian Authorities Remain Silent So Far

There has been no comment from Hana's husband or his lawyer regarding this matter. According to reports, divorce proceedings are ongoing in the US, and a legal dispute is underway between both parties. Officials from both India and the US have not yet provided any official response on this case.

Hana's case raises questions internationally about women's safety, marital violence, and the rights of women stranded abroad. It remains to be seen how the Indian government will intervene in this matter and what steps it will take to ensure justice for the woman.
