ICC Suspends Cricket Canada Membership With Immediate Effect National Teams Remain Eligible

The ICC has f membership obligations and administrative shortcomings, while confirming that Canada’s men’s, women’s and age-group national teams remain eligible for international competitions and player development programmes will continue under monitored funding arrangements.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended the membership of Cricket Canada with immediate effect, citing serious breaches of membership obligations and administrative shortcomings. However, the ICC clarified that Canada’s national cricket teams will remain eligible to participate in international competitions and that player development programmes will not be adversely affected.

The ICC said the decision was taken due to serious violations of membership-related obligations and administrative standards by Cricket Canada. The council stated that necessary organisational and administrative standards had not been followed, making disciplinary action necessary.

Despite the suspension, the ICC stated that Canadian cricketers will not bear the consequences of administrative disputes. Canada’s men’s, women’s and age-group national teams will remain eligible to participate in all ICC-approved tournaments.

The ICC also confirmed that financial assistance to Cricket Canada will continue. However, the utilisation of funds will be monitored under ICC management to ensure that financial resources are spent exclusively on player preparation, national team programmes and cricket development activities.

The ICC stated that players should not be penalised for administrative deficiencies beyond their control.

The ICC clarified that the suspension is not permanent. Cricket Canada will be required to implement several administrative, structural and governance-related reforms to restore its membership.

The implementation of these reforms will be jointly monitored by the ICC’s Normalisation Committee and senior administrative officials. Restoration of Cricket Canada’s membership will be considered only after prescribed standards are met and organisational transparency is ensured.

ICC Suspends Cricket Canada Membership With Immediate Effect National Teams Remain Eligible

In recent years, Cricket Canada has faced scrutiny over multiple controversies and allegations. Among them is an investigation linked to a match between Canada and New Zealand during the T20 World Cup, which is under review by the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU).

In addition, a matter involving former head coach Khurram Chauhan has emerged as a challenge for the organisation. An audio recording that surfaced last year reportedly contained allegations that some senior Cricket Canada officials interfered in the national team selection process.

The recording also reportedly claimed that pressure had been exerted to include certain players in the squad. Following allegations related to match-fixing and the integrity of cricket, the ICC’s integrity unit initiated an investigation into the matter. No final conclusion on the allegations has yet emerged, though continuing questions have affected Cricket Canada’s administrative credibility.

At its recent board meeting, the ICC also reviewed developments related to cricket administration in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

ICC representatives are expected to visit Bangladesh soon to assess electoral and administrative matters within the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Officials will meet stakeholders, administrators and cricket authorities to evaluate the situation.

On matters concerning cricket administration in Sri Lanka, senior ICC officials have already held discussions with multiple stakeholders. The council said it continues to monitor developments and may take further steps if required.
