Monsoon activity has become active again across India, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall, b winds and lightning for several parts of the country, including northern India. According to the IMD, weather conditions may remain challenging in several states on August 6, with the possibility of landslides in hilly areas and waterlogging and traffic disruptions in the plains.
According to weather experts, an active monsoon trough and upper-air cyclonic circulation are expected to bring widespread rainfall across parts of northern, eastern, central and western India. Authorities and disaster management agencies have also been directed to remain alert.
The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Wind speeds of 60 to 70 kmph may occur in several areas, which could affect normal public life.
The weather department said incidents of lightning and b thunderstorms may also increase along with rainfall. People have been advised to avoid open fields, trees and electric poles during adverse weather conditions.
Heavy rainfall is likely over eastern Uttar Pradesh, the Seemanchal region of Bihar, the hilly districts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh, Delhi-NCR, parts of Punjab, and several districts of West Bengal and Jharkhand. Waterlogging in low-lying areas and disruption to road traffic are expected in these regions.
Experts said continuous rainfall could also increase water levels in rivers and reservoirs. People living in hilly areas have been advised to exercise additional caution due to the possibility of landslides and flash floods.
Cloudy skies are expected throughout the day in the national capital and adjoining areas. The IMD has forecast multiple spells of rain accompanied by thunderstorms and b winds. Wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph may occur in some areas, which could affect traffic and lead to waterlogging in certain locations.
Widespread rainfall is expected across western, central and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are likely in Saharanpur, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Bahraich and Kushinagar, among other districts. The administration has directed local authorities to remain alert and keep relief arrangements prepared.
A heavy to very heavy rainfall alert has been issued for the Seemanchal region and north Bihar. Districts including Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, Purnia, Katihar, Darbhanga and Madhubani may experience intense rainfall accompanied by lightning.
Several districts of Jharkhand are also expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, with a risk of lightning.
Rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely over eastern and northern Rajasthan. Wind speeds of 50 to 60 kmph may occur in some areas. Monsoon activity is also expected to remain active across several districts of Madhya Pradesh.
