India’s weather conditions have changed across several regions as the southwest monsoon advances rapidly, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue alerts for b winds, thunderstorms and rainfall in 17 states over the coming hours and days. According to the weather department, wind speeds of 70 to 80 kilometres per hour may occur in several areas, while hailstorms are also possible in some locations.
The IMD said the southwest monsoon has advanced into Kerala, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu and additional parts of the southeast Arabian Sea. Conditions are expected to remain favourable for the monsoon to expand into more regions over the next three to four days. Strengthening monsoon activity over the Bay of Bengal may also increase rainfall intensity in northeastern and eastern India.
Weather experts said increased monsoon activity could bring widespread rainfall across northern, eastern, western and southern parts of India. The IMD estimates that several southern states may record sustained rainfall in the coming days, which could raise reservoir water levels and support agricultural activities.
Rain, thunderstorms and b winds are expected to continue across northern states including Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Strong winds in several areas may affect transport and daily activities. In Uttar Pradesh, rainfall and b winds are forecast in cities including Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Meerut, Noida, Gorakhpur and Bareilly, while western Uttar Pradesh is expected to experience relatively ber storm activity.
