Monsoon activity has intensified across several parts of India, affecting normal life as continuous rainfall has created flood-like conditions in multiple states while river water levels continue to rise. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued another severe weather warning for August 7.
According to the IMD's latest forecast, the next 12 to 24 hours are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall, b winds, and lightning across several parts of the country. The weather department has issued a special warning for 15 states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
Experts said intensified monsoon activity has been triggered by cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal and northern India. As a result, several regions may experience sudden heavy rainfall, waterlogging, overflowing rivers and streams, and landslide-like situations.
According to the IMD, northern India, eastern India, and the northeastern region are likely to experience the highest impact of rainfall. Several districts in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand may receive heavy rainfall accompanied by b winds with speeds of 50 to 60 kmph.
Delhi-NCR is also expected to witness rain accompanied by thunderstorms and b winds. Waterlogging and traffic disruption are likely in some parts of the national capital.
Heavy rainfall in the hilly regions of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir may lead to landslides and road blockages. The administration has been advised to remain alert in vulnerable areas.
The IMD has advised farmers to take necessary precautions in view of the prevailing weather conditions. In areas where heavy rainfall is expected, proper drainage arrangements are required to protect crops.
People living along riverbanks and fishermen have also been instructed to exercise caution. They have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement in marine and riverine areas due to b winds and adverse weather conditions.
Lightning incidents may increase across eastern India and the Gangetic plains during thunderstorms. The IMD has urged people to avoid standing in open fields, near tall trees, and around electric poles.
Experts said lightning is among the biggest natural hazards during the monsoon season and that taking precautions can substantially reduce the resulting damage.
In the national capital, Delhi, Thursday is expected to remain cloudy with thunderstorms, rain, and winds of 40 to 50 kmph. Temperatures may remain slightly below normal.
Heavy rainfall is also likely in western and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh. The IMD has advised residents in cities including Meerut, Noida, Ghaziabad, Agra, Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Gorakhpur to remain alert.
Continuous rainfall has increased the possibility of landslides and road closures in several districts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. People travelling to mountainous regions have been advised to check the latest weather information before undertaking their journey.
Heavy rainfall is also forecast at several places in Jammu and Kashmir, and the local administration is on alert.
