India Braces for Week of Heavy Monsoon Rainfall

The monsoon has become fully active across India, and heavy rainfall is expected to continue for the coming week. Weather conditions will be challenging in several states from June 22nd to 28th, 2025.

Weather: The monsoon is now fully active across India, and heavy rainfall is anticipated in various parts of the country between June 22nd and 28th, 2025. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for several states. Widespread rainfall is affecting all regions, from the west coast to the northeast, central, and southern parts of the country.

Northwest India: Rainfall Intensifies

The monsoon has strengthened its grip on northwest India. Heavy rainfall is predicted for Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh in the coming days. A warning of extremely heavy rainfall (20 cm+ in 24 hours) has been issued for various locations in eastern Rajasthan on June 23rd. Delhi-NCR, Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh may experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and b winds from June 24th to 26th.

Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may experience continuous heavy to very heavy rainfall from June 22nd to 26th. Landslides and road blockages are anticipated in mountainous areas.

Central India: Risk of Flood-like Situation

Monsoon rainfall is intensifying in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the Vidarbha region. Extremely heavy rainfall is expected in western Madhya Pradesh on June 23rd and 24th. Torrential rain is possible in Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh on June 25th and 26th. Waterlogging in low-lying areas and inundation of agricultural fields in rural areas are likely.

East and Northeast India: Continuous Heavy Rainfall

Rainfall continues in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Bengal, and northeastern states like Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland. Heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast for Bihar and Jharkhand from June 22nd to 25th. Extremely heavy rainfall is possible in Assam and Meghalaya on June 23rd, and in Arunachal Pradesh from June 23rd to 24th. The rising water levels in rivers pose a flood risk.

West India: Gujarat and Maharashtra Affected by Rainfall

The monsoon has gained momentum in Gujarat, Konkan, Goa, and coastal Maharashtra. Extremely heavy rainfall is anticipated in several districts of Gujarat on June 23rd. A continuous alert for torrential rain has been issued for Konkan and Goa from June 22nd to 28th. Local authorities are on alert due to the possibility of heavy rainfall in central Maharashtra and Marathwada.

South India: Cautiousness Needed

Monsoon activity remains active in South India, particularly in Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Kerala and coastal Karnataka from June 22nd to 28th. Strong winds (40-60 km/h) along with heavy rainfall are anticipated in interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema from June 25th to 28th. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh may experience light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms.

Monsoon Progress: Current Reach

The southwest monsoon has now reached almost every part of the country. It has spread to Jaipur, Agra, Dehradun, Shimla, Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. The monsoon is highly likely to reach the remaining parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi within the next two days. A low-pressure area persists over southeast Uttar Pradesh, which will gradually weaken but may cause heavy rainfall in the meantime.

The IMD advises citizens to avoid riverbanks, not to shelter under trees during lightning, and to stay away from waterlogged areas.
