Indian Equity Markets Open Marginally Lower as IT Stocks Weaken After Fed Decision

IT stocks came under pressure following the U.S. Federal Reserve’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged and signal a cautious policy stance. The rupee also weakened against the U.S. dollar in early trade.

Domestic equity markets opened marginally lower on June 18, with benchmark indices trading in a narrow range during early trade. NIFTY 50 opened 12 points lower at 23,073, while the BSE SENSEX was seen trading around 70 points lower at 77,088.

Market sentiment remained cautious following the latest monetary policy decision by the U.S. Federal Reserve. The impact was visible in Indian equities, where benchmark indices witnessed limited movement during the opening session, while information technology stocks came under selling pressure.

According to market experts, despite the U.S. central bank keeping interest rates unchanged, indications of a potentially cautious stance on future monetary policy have prompted investors to remain watchful. The impact has been reflected in global technology stocks as well as the Indian IT sector.

At the start of the trading session, NIFTY 50 opened with a marginal decline, while SENSEX also remained under pressure during the early hours of trade. However, no significant decline was observed, as investors assessed the implications of the Federal Reserve’s policy decision. Analysts said investors are currently monitoring global economic indicators, foreign investor activity, and upcoming economic data. In such an environment, market movements may remain within a limited range.

The U.S. Federal Reserve left interest rates unchanged at its latest meeting. However, the central bank indicated a cautious approach toward future monetary policy in view of inflation and economic activity. U.S. interest rates hold significant importance for global financial markets as they influence capital flows, dollar strength, and investment in emerging markets. As a result, Indian equity markets remain sensitive to Federal Reserve policy decisions.

Information technology stocks witnessed the highest pressure during Thursday’s trading session. Investors are concerned that if elevated interest rates persist in the United States for an extended period, corporate spending could be affected, potentially impacting demand for IT services. A substantial portion of the revenue of Indian IT companies is derived from the U.S. market.

Global economic uncertainty could therefore influence the performance of the sector. In contrast, shares of insurance, pharmaceutical, and select consumer-focused companies showed relative resilience, providing limited support to the broader market.

Pressure was also visible in the foreign exchange market. The Indian rupee weakened against the U.S. dollar in early trade, snapping its recent gains. According to experts, the U.S. Federal Reserve’s cautious stance has strengthened the dollar, increasing pressure on emerging market currencies. The direction of the rupee will also depend significantly on crude oil prices and foreign investor activity.

Several stocks remained in focus due to corporate announcements and new business developments. Companies from the infrastructure, telecom, hotel, pharmaceutical, and industrial sectors witnessed trading activity during the session. Experts said company-specific developments could enable certain stocks to perform differently from the broader market. Investors are therefore focusing not only on the overall market direction but also on the fundamentals of individual companies.
