AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has indicated that his party is open to an alliance ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. Addressing a public meeting in Kanpur’s Cantonment Assembly constituency on Sunday, Owaisi said political parties seeking to prevent the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from forming the government in Uttar Pradesh for a third consecutive term could hold talks with AIMIM. The party will wait until October 2 before taking a decision on a possible alliance.
During the Kanpur public meeting, Owaisi appealed for strengthening AIMIM’s presence in Uttar Pradesh. He said political representation for the Muslim community and its political voice in the state Assembly were necessary.
Owaisi’s statement comes as preparations for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections are progressing. AIMIM has increased its organisational activities in the state and has begun holding public meetings and programmes in different Assembly constituencies.
Owaisi said the party would not depend only on alliance talks and would continue its organisational work in Uttar Pradesh. He said AIMIM would visit different areas to understand local issues and strengthen its political base.
Owaisi said AIMIM would wait until October 2 regarding a possible alliance. After that, the party will decide whether to become part of an alliance and, if an alliance is formed, which political party it would partner with.
He said parties that want to prevent the BJP from forming the government in Uttar Pradesh for a third consecutive term could contact AIMIM. Owaisi has not named any specific political party as an alliance partner, and no final alliance or seat-sharing arrangement has been announced.
In Kanpur, Owaisi also referred to AIMIM’s efforts to form an alliance during the Bihar Assembly elections. He said his party had proposed contesting six seats as part of an alliance, but the proposal was not accepted.
Owaisi alleged that instead, his party faced incorrect allegations. He said AIMIM had contacted the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress and Left parties regarding an alliance in Bihar.
Owaisi referred to those efforts while calling on political parties in Uttar Pradesh to hold discussions on possible cooperation. He said AIMIM should be included in political alliance talks.
At the Kanpur meeting, Owaisi also criticised Samajwadi Party chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav. He referred to the 2013 Muzaffarnagar violence during the Samajwadi Party government and questioned the record of the government at the time.
Owaisi claimed that around 50,000 people were displaced from their homes and villages following the Muzaffarnagar violence. He also questioned the political representation of the Muslim community during the Samajwadi Party government. The figure of 50,000 displaced people was part of Owaisi’s statement; reports on the violence and subsequent displacement have provided differing figures and descriptions of the circumstances.
Owaisi accused successive governments in Uttar Pradesh of not adequately addressing several issues concerning the Muslim community. He specifically raised questions related to education and socio-economic development.
He said political parties would approach voters during the election and seek support for established political parties. Owaisi also called for a ber political base for AIMIM and representation in the state Assembly.
He said issues concerning the Muslim community should be raised in the Assembly through political representation.
Owaisi also criticised the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh over its policies and actions concerning madrasas. He referred to the role of Muslim religious scholars and ulema in India’s freedom movement.
He discussed the history of madrasas in Kanpur and claimed that Muslim ulema had issued a fatwa against British rule during the freedom struggle.
Owaisi also objected to remarks made by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath about freedom fighter and former Congress president Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar. Owaisi highlighted Jauhar’s role in the freedom movement while raising political and ideological questions about the BJP government.
Political activity by various parties is increasing ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. AIMIM has also focused on strengthening its organisation across several Assembly constituencies. Owaisi referred to upcoming party activities in Shravasti, Azamgarh and other areas.
At the Kanpur meeting, Owaisi called for strengthening AIMIM while also inviting parties that want to prevent the BJP from forming the government in Uttar Pradesh for a third consecutive term to hold talks with the party.
AIMIM has not made a final announcement on an alliance or seat-sharing arrangement. The party has said it will take a decision on the matter by October 2. No alliance partner or seat-sharing formula has been formally announced so far.
