Five people were swept away in a sudden flood in the Kuttapuzha River near the T.K. Colony area of Pookkottumpadam in Kerala’s Malappuram district at around 5 pm on Sunday. According to police, two people died, one person was rescued with the help of a local resident, and two others remained missing.
The five people were residents of Wandoor and had gone to the river to bathe. The river water level rose suddenly, and all five were swept away by the b current.
According to police, the situation became critical within a short time after the river’s water level rose suddenly. A local resident present at the scene managed to rescue one of the five people.
After the rescue, the incident was reported to the authorities. Personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services then launched a search operation for the missing people.
Local residents also assisted the rescue and search teams. The b current in the river and reduced visibility after darkness made the operation more challenging.
The Fire and Rescue Services team searched for about an hour before recovering the body of a young man from the Mattikund area.
The search continued in the river and surrounding areas. Later at night, another body was recovered near Ayanikkund in the lower section of the river, according to police.
With the recovery of the second body, two deaths have been confirmed in the incident.
The search for the two missing people continued after nightfall despite reduced visibility. Fire and Rescue Services personnel and local residents remained involved in the operation.
Police said visibility was poor during the search in the river and surrounding areas because of darkness. The rescue teams and local residents continued efforts to locate the two missing people.
The two bodies recovered by the rescue team were taken to a nearby hospital, police said.
