Prior to this, on October 21, the Nifty and Sensex closed at record highs during the Diwali Muhurat Trading session. On October 22, the day after Diwali, the festival of Balipratipada is celebrated with great fervor across the country. This day is considered highly significant from a religious and cultural perspective. On this occasion, most financial institutions, banks, government offices, and commercial markets across the country remain closed. For this reason, a holiday has also been declared for the stock market.

The festival of Balipratipada is celebrated along with Govardhan Puja and Annakoot festival. On this day, the story of Lord Vishnu's Vamana avatar and King Bali is remembered. People organize special prayers and offerings (prasad) at their homes.

Investor Enthusiasm in Muhurat Trading

As every year, a special Muhurat Trading session was organized in the stock market on the occasion of Diwali Lakshmi Puja. Investors participated enthusiastically in this special session held on October 21. Investing during the auspicious time of the festival is considered fortunate in Indian tradition, which led to the enthusiasm seen on the trading floor.

During the Muhurat Trading session, the Sensex closed with a marginal gain of 0.07 percent at 84,426.34 points. Meanwhile, the Nifty 50 index saw a rise of 0.1 percent, reaching the level of 25,868.6. This marked the highest closing for both indices since September 2024.

Surge in Midcap and Smallcap Stocks Too

During the festive session, a positive trend was observed not only in large-cap stocks but also in the Midcap and Smallcap indices. The Nifty Midcap 100 registered a gain of 0.11 percent, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 saw a rise of 0.6 percent. This indicates that investors showed confidence in mid and small-cap stocks alongside large companies.

During Muhurat Trading, some major stocks delivered excellent performance. Shares of Cipla, Bajaj Finserv, Axis Bank, Infosys, and Grasim were among the top gainers on Nifty. These stocks witnessed significant buying interest from investors.

However, some company shares experienced slight declines. Key stocks that saw losses included Kotak Mahindra Bank, ICICI Bank, HCL Technologies, Max Healthcare, and Asian Paints. Nevertheless, the overall market maintained a positive sentiment, and investor confidence remained b.

Which Segments Will Be Affected

During the Diwali Balipratipada holiday, not only the equity segment but also other trading segments will remain closed. There will be no Futures & Options (F&O) segment, currency market, or derivatives trading on both NSE and BSE.

However, there will be some relief in the commodity market. The morning trading session on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain closed, but the evening session, meaning trading will resume after 5 PM.

When is the Next Market Holiday?

After Diwali, investors will now have their next holiday in November. On November 5, the Indian stock market will remain closed on the occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti. Following this, there will also be a holiday on December 25 for Christmas.
