Indian Stock Market Closed on September 14 for Ganesh Chaturthi Trading Resumes September 15

NSE and BSE will remain closed on September 14, 2026, for Ganesh Chaturthi, with regular equity trading resuming on September 15. MCX evening trading will resume at 5 pm.

Indian stock market trading will resume on Tuesday, September 15, after the market closed lower for the fifth consecutive week. Trading will remain closed on Monday, September 14, on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi 2026. The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and National Stock Exchange (NSE) have designated the day as a trading holiday.

There will be no trading in the domestic equity market throughout September 14 due to Ganesh Chaturthi 2026. Investors will not be able to conduct normal buying and selling of shares on the NSE and BSE. Regular trading will also remain unavailable in the equity derivatives segment and other related segments. The next regular trading session will begin on Tuesday, September 15.

Stock market holidays are announced in advance through the respective exchange calendars. These holidays can differ from those applicable to banks or government offices because the NSE and BSE issue separate trading calendars. Therefore, whether banks are open or closed on a particular festival or national holiday, the opening and closing of the stock market are determined by the official exchange calendar.

The September 14 holiday comes after the Indian stock market closed lower for the fifth consecutive week. Market participants will therefore turn to the next trading session on September 15. When the market reopens, global cues, crude oil prices, foreign investor activity and domestic economic developments may affect shares and major indices.

The commodity market will follow a different schedule on Ganesh Chaturthi. The morning trading session on the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will remain closed on September 14. Normal commodity trading will not take place from 9 am to 5 pm. However, the MCX evening trading session will resume from 5 pm and may continue until 11:30 pm. If Daylight Saving Time is applicable in the United States, the evening commodity market session may continue until 11:55 pm.

Investors whose activities involve gold, silver, crude oil or other commodity contracts will therefore have to account for the different trading schedules of the equity and commodity markets.

A Trading Holiday and a Settlement Holiday are not the same. A Trading Holiday means that trading on the exchange remains closed on the designated day. Investors generally cannot conduct regular trading to buy or sell shares on such a day. Under a Settlement Holiday, trading may take place on the exchange, but clearing and settlement processes do not take place on a particular day. This means the date of a transaction and the date of its final settlement can be different.

September 14, 2026, has been designated as a full Trading Holiday for the domestic equity market. Regular equity trading will therefore not take place on the NSE and BSE. Investors should check the relevant exchange's official calendar and their broker's schedule before planning any order or transaction.
