Indian equity benchmarks witnessed alternating bouts of buying and selling throughout Wednesday's trading session. The markets opened slightly lower before the Sensex and Nifty recovered. Both indices continued to fluctuate during afternoon trade.
Buying interest in select large-cap stocks increased during the final trading hours, helping the Sensex close above 77,200. The Nifty also gained more than 100 points to finish above 23,900.

Real estate stocks recorded notable buying interest on Wednesday, with the Nifty Realty index rising approximately 2%. Media stocks also attracted investor interest.
Shares of companies manufacturing everyday consumer products recorded gains. The Nifty FMCG and Consumer Durables indices advanced by more than 1%.
In contrast, IT stocks faced selling pressure. Weakness in the technology sector limited the overall gains in the broader market.

The results of the US midterm elections were among the key developments tracked by the Indian stock market on Wednesday. The Democratic Party secured majorities in both chambers of the US Congress. The outcome is being described as a 'Blue Sweep' in American politics.
Following the results, President Donald Trump may have to negotiate with the opposition on several decisions during the remaining two years of his term.
Investors are monitoring the potential implications of the changed political landscape for US trade policies, import tariffs and global economic decisions. These developments are also relevant to Indian markets, particularly for companies operating in the IT, pharmaceutical and export-oriented sectors, whose businesses may be affected by US policy decisions.
However, Wednesday's gains in the Indian stock market cannot be attributed solely to the US election results. Softer crude oil prices, better quarterly corporate results and buying by foreign investors also supported the market.
Global equity markets recorded mixed movements amid the US election results.
Japan's TOPIX index declined approximately 0.9%. In contrast, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index gained 1.3%, while China's Shanghai Composite index advanced approximately 1.9%.
