Indian stock markets to remain closed on January 15 2026 due to Maharashtra civic polls

Indian equity markets will remain fully closed on Thursday, January 15, 2026, due to the Maharashtra municipal corporation elections. Trading across the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange will be suspended for the day following a revised circular issued by the exchanges.

According to the exchanges, there will be no trading or settlement activity in any segment on January 15. Equity, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives, the currency market, the commodity market, and the Securities Lending and Borrowing mechanism will all remain closed. All pending orders will be carried forward to the next trading day.

The BSE, in its official circular, stated that trading in equity, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives, and Electronic Gold Receipts will remain suspended on January 15 for administrative reasons related to the conduct of elections. The NSE issued a similar notification, confirming that trading and settlement across all segments will be suspended for the day.

The exchanges also announced a change in the expiry schedule for equity derivatives contracts originally set to expire on January 15, 2026. These contracts expired a day earlier, on January 14, 2026, in line with exchange directives.

Trading in the Indian stock markets will resume on Friday, January 16, 2026, with normal market hours from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm across all segments.

Following the January 15 closure, the next scheduled trading holiday will be on January 26, 2026, on account of Republic Day, as per the official trading holiday calendar.

Excluding weekends, Indian stock exchanges will observe a total of 16 trading holidays in 2026. These holidays include national observances, religious festivals, and other specified occasions during which both the BSE and the NSE will remain closed.

Major stock market holidays in 2026 include Republic Day on January 26, Holi on March 3, Shri Ram Navami on March 26, Shri Mahavir Jayanti on March 31, Good Friday on April 3, Dr B R Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14, Maharashtra Day on May 1, Bakri Id on May 28, Muharram on July 21, Ganesh Chaturthi on September 14, Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Dussehra on October 20, Diwali Balipratipada on November 10, Prakash Guruparv Shri Guru Nanak Dev on November 24, and Christmas on December 25.

Under normal circumstances, Indian stock markets operate from Monday to Friday, with the regular trading session running from 9:15 am to 3:30 pm and the pre-open session from 9:00 am to 9:15 am. Markets remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
