The long-standing internal disputes and administrative hurdles within the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) have now been resolved. Following this, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made a significant decision.
IOA Funding Update 2025: After the administrative disputes and internal conflicts within the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) were resolved, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made a significant decision. The IOC has announced the restoration of ₹15 crore funding to the IOA under the Olympic Solidarity Program. This funding had been temporarily withheld last year, impacting athlete development programs.
Internal Disputes and Resolution in IOA
In recent months, there had been a dispute concerning the appointment of CEO Raghuram Iyer in the IOA. This dispute led to dissatisfaction among some members of the executive council, raising questions about good governance and transparency within the organization. However, after the intervention of Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, a consensus was reached between IOA President P.T. Usha and the dissenting members of the executive council.
Subsequently, Iyer's appointment was formally approved on July 24, and pending reports and financial audits were also passed in the General Assembly held on August 13.
IOC's Decision
In a letter to P.T. Usha, IOC Director James Macleod stated that the corrective steps taken by the IOA in recent weeks have fostered an environment of transparency and unity within the organization. Based on this, the IOC has decided to restore the funding for India. Macleod also mentioned that the National Sports Administration Act will further strengthen good governance in sports organizations in India and advance the spirit of the Olympic Charter.
The restoration of funding by the IOC has brought significant relief not only to the IOA but also to the athletes. Several development and training programs had been affected due to the year-long suspension. With the grant now restored, athletes will have access to better training, resources, and coaching facilities. According to sports experts, this move will be crucial for the sustainable development of sports in India and the preparation of athletes for the Olympic level.
Following the restoration of the grant, the IOA can now focus on athlete training plans and competition preparations at both national and international levels. The IOC has expressed its hope that the National Sports Administration Act implemented in India will ensure better governance and transparency in sports organizations.
