New Delhi: A new chapter has been added to the history of India's judiciary. Justice Suryakant, a senior judge of the Supreme Court, took oath as the country's 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Monday, November 24, 2025. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to him at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Justice Suryakant will now assume responsibility for the nation's highest judicial office, succeeding the recently retired CJI Justice B.R. Gavai.
The notification for Justice Suryakant's appointment was issued by the Union Government's Ministry of Law in early November 2025. His appointment is considered an example of experience, integrity, and administrative capability in India's legal fraternity.
How long will CJI Suryakant serve?
Justice Suryakant's tenure is set from November 24, 2025, to February 9, 2027. Thus, he will serve as the Chief Justice of the country for approximately 15 months. According to the tradition of the judiciary in India, the CJI's tenure lasts until a fixed age (65 years).
