The Reason Behind the Attack

The reason behind this attack is said to be a skit performed in a comedy show by Kapil Sharma. According to terrorist Laddi, a participant in the show made humorous comments on the traditional attire and conduct of Nihang Sikhs. Laddi and his associates considered this skit offensive to the religious sentiments of the community.

In his statement, Laddi said that any kind of mockery of religious or spiritual identity is unacceptable. He wrote on social media, "No religion can be insulted under the guise of comedy. This attack is a warning."

Cafe Shaken by Gunfire in Canada

The incident took place in the city of Surrey, Canada, where Kapil Sharma's cafe, 'Caps Cafe', is located. Around 1:50 AM on July 10, 2025, shots were fired at the cafe. According to the Surrey Police Service, employees were present in the cafe at the time. However, there are no reports of any injuries. The police said that the attack was targeted at the business. The police have started examining the CCTV footage of the surrounding area and are continuing their investigation to identify the attackers.

Terrorist Laddi's Confession and Threat

In a post on social media, Harjit Singh Laddi admitted that he and his associate, Toofan Singh, were behind the attack. Laddi also claimed that 9 rounds of firing were carried out at the cafe. He said that people connected to the community had tried to contact Kapil Sharma's manager several times, but there was no response. Laddi also questioned why Kapil Sharma had not yet publicly apologized. He further added, "We will never tolerate any tampering with religious sentiments."

A statement was issued on Instagram by the cafe regarding the attack. The post read, "We opened Caps Cafe with the hope that it would provide a safe and happy environment. Violence with this dream is heartbreaking. We are still recovering from this shock, but we will not give up." The cafe team further stated in their post, "Thank you all for your support and prayers. This cafe is here because of your trust. Let's all stand together against violence. Caps Cafe will return soon."

Background of BKI and Laddi

Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) is a banned terrorist organization, declared as a terrorist organization in Canada as well as India. Harjit Singh Laddi is an active member of this organization and several cases are registered against him in India.

His name is included in the National Investigation Agency (NIA)'s Most Wanted list. He faces several serious charges in India, including terrorist activities, funding, and inciting youth.

Investigation and Action by Canada Police

Surrey Police in Canada started an investigation immediately after the attack. The police said that the attack was planned and carried out with a specific target in mind. Currently, the police have collected evidence from the crime scene and are examining CCTV footage of the surrounding areas. The search for the attackers is ongoing.
