Karnataka Congress leadership change speculation intensifies after D K Shivakumar remarks

Speculation over a leadersf Minister D.K. Shivakumar’s recent remarks and the completion of three years of the Congress government, amid continued discussion over an alleged informal power-sharing arrangement with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Leadership change speculation within the Karnataka Congress has intensified again after the conclusion of Assembly elections in five states, with recent remarks by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar adding momentum to discussions around an alleged power-sharing arrangement.

As the Congress government in Karnataka completed three years in office, political discussions over a possible leadership transition resurfaced, centering on speculation of power-sharing between Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. Shivakumar’s recent remarks have renewed debate over internal equations within the party.

Following the Congress party’s victory in the 2023 Assembly elections, party leadership was widely reported to have informally worked out an alleged power-sharing formula between Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar. Under the reported arrangement, the chief minister’s tenure was said to be divided between the two leaders. However, the party has never publicly confirmed any formal agreement.

With the government having completed three years, supporters of Shivakumar believe the time for a leadership transition has arrived in line with the alleged understanding. The demand has triggered renewed political discussion within the party.

When asked by journalists in Chamarajanagar about the possibility of becoming chief minister, D.K. Shivakumar said, “Time will tell.”

The brief statement has prompted fresh speculation within the Karnataka Congress. Political observers believe the remark reflects Shivakumar’s political aspirations and is being viewed as indirect pressure on the party leadership.

However, Shivakumar also reiterated that he is a disciplined party worker and would abide by whatever decision the party high command takes. His remarks have generated multiple interpretations in political circles.

Following Shivakumar’s statement, supporters of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have reportedly become more cautious. Discussions within the party have intensified over whether a leadership transition could affect the stability of the state government.

Supporters of Siddaramaiah maintain that the government has taken several important policy decisions over the past three years and argue that a sudden leadership change could affect administrative continuity.

According to sources, the Congress central leadership is monitoring developments and there is a possibility that both leaders may soon be called to New Delhi for discussions. The party leadership is reportedly seeking to prevent any public dispute while resolving internal differences. Political observers say maintaining balance between the two leaders remains a key challenge for the Congress high command, as both continue to play important roles for the party in the state.

Discussions within the Karnataka Congress over an alleged informal two-and-a-half-year rotational arrangement have continued since the formation of the government in 2023, although no official confirmation has ever been issued. With the government completing three years in office, the issue has again returned to the centre of political discussion.
