A major fire in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, has destroyed hundreds of homes, leaving families without shelter and belongings within hours. What were once active settlements have been reduced to charred remains, with residents left amid debris and ashes.
Accounts from affected residents indicate that each family has suffered extensive losses, with personal belongings, household items, and essential goods destroyed. While individual circumstances vary, residents consistently reported losing all possessions in the fire.
One affected family reported that wedding preparations for a daughter were underway before the fire broke out. Items including the bridal outfit, jewellery, utensils, and stored provisions were destroyed. Invitations had already been sent, and arrangements were in place. The fire reduced all preparations to ashes. The groom arrived with the wedding procession but left without completing any ceremony after witnessing the conditions. A family member stated, “We had thought we would send our daughter off happily, but fate took everything away.”
Several labourer families reported losing homes built over years through incremental savings and effort. Structures made of brick and tin roofing, along with savings meant for children’s education or medical treatment, were destroyed in the fire.
One elderly resident was found sitting outside his burned dwelling holding damaged documents. He stated that identification papers including Aadhaar card, ration card, and land documents were lost in the fire, leaving him without proof of identity or property.
Children in the affected area were seen sitting in open spaces after losing access to shelter. Some had not eaten during the night, and several attempted to locate books and toys in the debris without success.
Women in the settlement reported loss of clothing, food, and basic necessities. Some were seen seeking assistance from nearby areas. One resident stated that all belongings, including clothes, had been destroyed in the fire.
After the fire was brought under control and smoke subsided, residents searched through debris for salvageable items such as utensils, cash, and documents. Most reported recovering only ashes and damaged materials.
Fire brigade teams responded and eventually controlled the blaze after sustained efforts. Relief and rescue operations have been initiated by the administration. Temporary shelter and food arrangements have been provided to some families, though residents stated that assistance remains insufficient.
Local residents alleged delays in the arrival of fire services and stated that timely response could have reduced the scale of damage. Some also reported inadequate fire safety arrangements in the area.
Residents stated that the incident has left them without homes, belongings, or financial support, and that rebuilding their lives will be difficult. Many have demanded compensation and long-term rehabilitation measures from authorities.
The incident has also raised concerns regarding fire safety infrastructure and emergency preparedness in urban settlements, with residents indicating that lack of adequate arrangements contributed to the extent of damage.
