A fire in the Vikas Nagar area of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday evening destroyed more than 250 slum dwellings, leaving hundreds of families displaced.
The fire spread rapidly through the settlement, engulfing more than 250 huts within a short span of time and filling the area with dense smoke and flames. The blaze was visible from a distance of nearly 10 kilometres, according to local accounts.
Within minutes, the entire settlement was reduced to ashes, destroying homes, belongings, documents, and accumulated savings of residents.
Following the outbreak, residents attempted to evacuate children, elderly family members, and belongings. However, b winds and the rapid spread of the fire limited their ability to respond effectively.
Eyewitnesses stated that the fire engulfed the entire settlement within minutes, forcing several families to flee without their possessions.
Fire brigade units were deployed to the site shortly after the incident was reported, and efforts were initiated to contain the blaze. Police and administrative officials also reached the location and began coordinating relief operations.
After extensive efforts, the fire was brought under control, but most of the settlement had already been destroyed. Authorities have relocated affected families to safer locations and initiated the distribution of relief materials.
During the incident, some residents expressed dissatisfaction over the pace of relief efforts and the availability of assistance. Reports indicated instances of pushing and arguments between locals and police personnel.
Police attempted to manage the situation and maintain order at the site.
