Pre-monsoon activity has intensified across Madhya Pradesh ahead of the arrival of the southwest monsoon. The India Meteorological Department has issued alerts for rain and b winds in multiple districts, while heatwave conditions may persist in parts of the Gwalior-Chambal region over the next few days.
Pre-monsoon activity has accelerated across the state before the onset of the monsoon. According to the Meteorological Department, districts including Bhopal, Narmadapuram, Seoni, Jabalpur, Sagar, Raisen, Sehore, Vidisha, Indore, Dhar, Alirajpur, Chhindwara, Betul, Khandwa, Burhanpur, Khargone and Barwani are among nearly 35 districts likely to experience rainfall, thunderstorms and b winds on Monday.
Meteorologists said wind speeds of 40 to 60 kilometres per hour may occur in several areas. Some locations may also witness heavy rain and thunderstorms. The conditions are expected to reduce temperatures and provide relief from heat.
The state has recorded above-normal rainfall during the early part of June. According to Meteorological Department data, average rainfall in Madhya Pradesh so far has been around 65 per cent higher than the normal level.
Districts including Bhopal, Agar Malwa and Shajapur have recorded nearly two inches of rainfall, while Neemuch has received about two-and-a-half inches. Pre-monsoon activity has contributed to lower temperatures and relatively pleasant weather conditions in several regions.
The Meteorological Department estimates that the southwest monsoon may enter Madhya Pradesh between June 15 and June 18.
The monsoon has recently reached Maharashtra, increasing the likelihood of its advance towards Madhya Pradesh. Last year, the monsoon entered the state on June 16. Weather experts said the currently active pre-monsoon system is creating favourable conditions for the monsoon’s arrival.
While several parts of the state are expected to receive relief through rain and cooler winds, heat conditions may continue in the Gwalior-Chambal region for the next few days.
According to the Meteorological Department, temperatures in Gwalior, Morena, Bhind and Sheopur districts may reach 41 degrees Celsius. Heatwave conditions are also likely on June 9 and June 10 in these areas.
Officials have advised people to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during afternoon hours and to maintain adequate hydration.
On Sunday, Nowgong was the hottest location in the state, recording a maximum temperature of 42.5 degrees Celsius.
Sagar recorded 41.5 degrees Celsius, Datia 41.4 degrees Celsius, while Khajuraho and Damoh registered temperatures above 41 degrees Celsius.
Among major cities, temperatures were recorded at 40.4 degrees Celsius in Gwalior, 40.1 degrees Celsius in Jabalpur, 38.8 degrees Celsius in Bhopal, 38 degrees Celsius in Ujjain and 37.4 degrees Celsius in Indore.
The Meteorological Department said temperatures may decline further in areas receiving rainfall, while northwestern districts are likely to continue experiencing hot conditions for the time being.
