Maharashtra: The Maharashtra government has taken a historic decision to rename the town of Islampur in Sangli district. The town will now be known as 'Ishwarpur'. This decision was taken during the state cabinet meeting on Thursday, the last day of the monsoon session of the legislative assembly. The state government has clarified that this proposal will now be sent to the central government for approval.

Chhagan Bhujbal Provides Information

State Minister for Food and Civil Supplies, Chhagan Bhujbal, informed the media that this name change has been approved by the state cabinet. As per procedure, final approval will now be obtained from the central government.

Shiv Pratishthan Raised the Demand

The demand for this name change is not new. The demand to rename Islampur had been raised for a long time, with the Hindutva organization 'Shiv Pratishthan' playing a key role. The organization's activists had submitted a memorandum to the Sangli district collector in this regard.

Demand Pending for Years

Supporters of Sambhaji Bhide, the founder and prominent leader of Shiv Pratishthan, have kept this issue alive for years. It is reported that this demand had been pending since 1986, and now the state government has taken a decisive step on it. Supporters also stated that their movement would continue until this demand was recognized.
