Maharashtra to Introduce Hindi as Third Language in Schools

The Maharashtra government has decided to introduce Hindi as a third language in schools from classes 1 to 5, starting in the academic year 2025-26. Students will have the option to choose other languages.

Maharashtra: The Maharashtra government has decided to implement a new language policy from the 2025-26 academic year. Under this policy, Hindi will be taught as a third language in Marathi and English medium schools from classes 1 to 5. However, it will not be compulsory but included 'generally'. This means Hindi will be prioritized as the third language, but students will have a choice.

Option for other Indian languages also available

The amended government order also stipulates that if 20 or more students in a class wish to study another Indian language instead of Hindi, they will be given that option. In such a scenario, arrangements will be made for a teacher of that language, or the language will be taught online.

Education Minister supports the decision

School Education Minister Dada Bhuse has supported the government's decision. He stated that Hindi is a widely spoken language and learning it will benefit students in higher education and other fields. He also mentioned that strict action will be taken against schools not teaching Marathi.

Discontent among Marathi organizations and the opposition

Following this decision, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Congress, and several Marathi organizations have criticized the government. They allege that the government had previously stated that Hindi would not be compulsory but is now implementing this policy through the "back door." Congress has accused Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of betraying the Marathi identity, claiming the decision is against the interests of Marathi speakers.

Raj Thackeray issues a warning

MNS chief Raj Thackeray challenged the government, stating that attempts to forcefully impose Hindi in the state will not be tolerated. He also warned of an agitation against the government on this issue.

Chief Minister clarifies the situation

Following the controversy, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis clarified that learning Hindi is not compulsory for students. He stated that any student can choose any Indian language as their third language. He termed the entire controversy unnecessary, stating the government is merely following the guidelines of the new National Education Policy (NEP 2020).

Decision taken under the State Curriculum Framework 2024

The Maharashtra School Education Department recently implemented the 'State Curriculum Framework 2024 for School Education'. This decision is part of that framework. Its aim is to strengthen language skills in primary education and prepare students to thrive in a multilingual environment.

Marathi language to remain compulsory

The new policy also clarifies that Marathi will remain compulsory in all medium schools in the state. This means there are no plans to remove Marathi or replace it with Hindi. The government aims to ensure students gain knowledge of both a regional and a national language.
