Maharashtra Onion Prices Rise to ₹60-70 Per Kg as Market Arrivals Decline

Onion prices in Maharashtra have risen, with retail prices reaching ₹60-70 per kg in Mumbai and ₹60-65 per kg in Pune. Lower arrivals have pushed wholesale prices higher at Lasalgaon APMC and other markets.

Onion prices have increased in Maharashtra, with retail prices of good-quality onions reaching ₹60-70 per kg in several markets. The rise comes amid fluctuations in vegetable prices across several parts of the country.

In Mumbai, onions are selling at around ₹60-70 per kg in retail markets. In Pune, consumers are paying approximately ₹60-65 per kg. Maharashtra is one of India’s major onion-producing states, and price movements in its markets can affect supplies to other states.

The current increase in onion prices is attributed primarily to lower market arrivals. Major onion-producing areas in Maharashtra include Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Pune and Solapur, and a decline in arrivals from these regions puts pressure on wholesale prices.

At Nashik’s Lasalgaon APMC, one of the country’s major onion markets, good-quality onions are selling at around ₹55 per kg in wholesale trade, while relatively lower-quality onions are priced at about ₹45 per kg.

According to a member associated with Lasalgaon APMC, current wholesale prices are among the highest levels recorded over the past two years. The member estimated that prices could face further pressure if adequate supplies do not arrive from neighbouring states.

According to market experts, higher arrivals from Maharashtra and other producing states are required to stabilise onion prices. Increased supplies from Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka could improve availability in mandis. An improvement in supply could lead to a moderation in wholesale prices, although this will depend largely on production, mandi arrivals and transportation arrangements.

Wholesale trader Nitin Parek said retail onion prices in Mumbai have increased by around ₹10 per kg over the past month. In the city’s wholesale market, good-quality onions are available at approximately ₹52 per kg, while lower-quality onions are priced at around ₹40 per kg.

In Pune, retail onion prices have also reached ₹60-65 per kg, while the wholesale price is reported at around ₹50 per kg.
