Man Rapes Sister-in-Law in Jharkhand's Dumka, Arrested After Panchayat Fails to Deliver Justice

In Dumka district of Jharkhand, a cousin brother-in-law forcibly entered his sister-in-law's parental home and raped her. Following the complaint, the police arrested the accused Ganesh Hansda and sent him to judicial custody, while the victim was sent to the hospital for medical examination.

Dumka: A shameful and reprehensible case has come to light in the Shikaripara police station area of Dumka district, Jharkhand, where a cousin brother-in-law raped his cousin sister-in-law. The incident occurred on the night of September 10, around 1 AM, but due to the absence of any impartial decision in the village council (Panchayat), the victim was compelled to file a written complaint with the police station on September 17 to seek justice. The police took swift action, arresting the accused Ganesh Hansda and sending him to judicial custody.

Shameful Incident Occurred at Victim's Home

According to information, the victim had gone from her in-laws' house to her parental home. The accused cousin brother-in-law, Ganesh Hansda, lives in the same area where the victim's in-laws reside. At night, when the victim was alone in her house, Ganesh seized the opportunity, entered her home by removing a bamboo door, and forcibly raped his cousin sister-in-law. After committing the act, he fled.

This incident was shocking for the entire village. The victim narrated the entire incident to her husband, who then contacted the village head (Gram Pradhan). This criminal act created an atmosphere of fear and outrage throughout the area.

Victim Did Not Get Justice in Panchayat

The victim's husband requested the Gram Pradhan to convene a village council (Panchayat) regarding this matter. The accused, Ganesh Hansda, was also present in the Panchayat. However, the accused denied all allegations against him. Due to the inability of the Panchayat to reach any impartial decision or punishment, the victim had to resort to legal channels to seek justice.

With the Panchayat remaining inactive in the village, the victim filed a written complaint at the Shikaripara police station on September 17, a week after the incident. Only after this step did the matter proceed towards legal action. This incident also highlights the challenges of obtaining justice amidst the rural justice system and social pressures.

Accused Arrested Following Victim's Complaint

Immediately after receiving the victim's complaint, the police initiated action. Case number 103/25 was registered at Shikaripara police station under Section 64(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The complaint clearly accused Ganesh Hansda of rape.

The police immediately arrested the accused and sent him to judicial custody. Concurrently, the victim was sent to Dumka Medical College Hospital for her medical examination. Police officials stated that this action was taken with the objective of preventing crimes against women in society and ensuring justice.
