The month of Sawan is considered the most sacred for the worship of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. On every Tuesday of this month, women observe the Mangala Gauri Vrat. This year, August 5, 2025, marks the last Tuesday of Sawan, which will also be the final Mangala Gauri Vrat. It is believed that worshiping Goddess Parvati with proper rituals and performing special remedies on this day brings happiness, prosperity, and peace to married life.
Why This Vrat Is Observed
The Mangala Gauri Vrat is primarily observed by married women for the long life of their husbands and the happiness of their marital life. Unmarried girls observe it to find a good and suitable groom. This fast is kept to please Goddess Parvati, as she is considered the goddess of good fortune and prosperity.
Offer 16 Items of Adornment to Goddess Parvati
On this day, women who observe the fast take a bath in the morning, wear clean clothes, and decorate a worship plate in front of the idol or picture of Goddess Parvati. The plate includes 16 items of adornment, such as bangles, bindi, sindoor, mahavar, kajal, mehndi, comb, nath (nose ring), bichua (toe ring), choti (hair braid), ring, anklet, sandalwood, gajra (flower garland), bindi-stick, and perfume. These are offered to Goddess Gauri.
Offer Kheer as Bhog to the Goddess
White color is considered dear to Goddess Parvati on this day, so offering kheer (rice pudding) is considered very auspicious. Offer kheer made of rice and milk with a tulsi (basil) leaf, and later distribute it among family members as prasad. Some women also prepare pua, malpua, and halwa to offer to the Goddess.
The Vrat Katha (fasting story) has special significance in the Mangala Gauri Vrat. Women who observe the fast recite the Vrat Katha, which describes the difficult penance of Goddess Parvati and her efforts to attain Lord Shiva. Listening to and narrating this story brings merit and fulfills the purpose of the fast.
