Meta Introduces New Instagram Safety Features for Teenagers

Meta has launched new messaging features on Instagram to enhance online safety for teenagers. These include measures to identify scammers, provide account information of message senders, a unified 'Block and Report' option, and increased monitoring of children's accounts.

Instagram: In this era of social media, the online safety of teenagers has become a critical concern. Tech companies are now working on policies that can protect adolescent users from cyber fraud, online harassment, and inappropriate interactions. Taking a major step in this direction, Meta has announced new safety features for teenagers on Instagram. Meta says that these features will make teenagers more aware and vigilant during messaging. It will also simplify the process of identifying and blocking potential scammers.

A Smart Shield of Security in Messaging

The first and most notable feature announced by Meta is being introduced in Instagram's Direct Messages (DM). When a teenager messages a user for the first time — especially if they don't follow each other — Instagram will display some safety advice.

These suggestions will include:

  • Carefully review the person's profile.
  • It's not necessary to respond if the conversation feels uncomfortable.
  • Share personal information thoughtfully.

In this way, teenagers will not only receive information about digital self-defense, but they will also develop as vigilant users.

Know the Real Identity of the Message Sender

Another significant update is that teenage users will now also receive information about when the Instagram account of the person they are communicating with via message was created (month and year). This feature can be very helpful in identifying scammers, as fraud is often committed through newly created fake profiles. Teenagers will find it easier to make decisions based on this information about whether or not to continue the conversation with that person.

Block and Report Now with a Single Click

Teenagers often don't understand what to do when faced with an uncomfortable conversation. That's why Meta has now combined 'Block and Report' into a single option. Now, if a teenager wants to block a user, they can also report that person at the same time — with a single click. This process is not only faster but also psychologically relieving for teenagers, knowing they can take immediate action to protect themselves.

Increased Monitoring of Children's Accounts

Touching on another sensitive area, Meta has also announced that they will now pay special attention to Instagram accounts that post children's photos and videos but are actually run by adults. This will apply particularly to accounts run by children's talent managers, parents, or guardians. According to Meta's policy, children under the age of 13 cannot run accounts themselves. However, if an adult explicitly states that they are running the account on behalf of a child, it may be allowed — provided they adhere to Instagram's safety guidelines.

Why is a Change in Meta's Policy Necessary?

Today, adolescents are the most active group on social media, but they are also the most at risk. Teenagers have a higher share in cases of fake accounts, online grooming, cyberbullying, and data theft. Meta's move demonstrates that the company is now prioritizing user safety as well as platform expansion. These new features will make solid progress towards empowering adolescents and providing them with a safe digital environment.

What Impact Will This Have in India?

India is one of the countries with the largest Instagram user base in the world. Here, there are millions of teenagers who use Instagram for education, entertainment, and social engagement. With the implementation of these safety measures, especially teenagers in rural and semi-urban areas where digital awareness is still limited, will gain basic information about cyber security.
