Microsoft Copilot to Get 'Smart Mode' Powered by GPT-5 for Automated AI Responses

Microsoft may add a new Smart Mode to Copilot, which will be based on GPT-5. It will automatically decide when to give quick answers and when to apply in-depth reasoning. The feature is currently in testing and may be launched soon.

Microsoft: Microsoft is preparing to make a major change to its popular AI chatbot Copilot. According to reports, the company is working on a new feature called 'Smart Mode,' which will likely be powered by OpenAI's next-generation model, GPT-5. This feature will save users from the complexity of model selection and automatically decide whether to provide a quick answer to a question or use in-depth, reasoning-based analysis.

What is Smart Mode?

According to a report by TestingCatalog, a new Smart Mode option has been spotted in Copilot's code. Its main objective is to automatically determine, based on the user's query, when to provide a quick response and when to think deeply. Until now, users had to manually select a model from a dropdown menu in chatbots (such as 'Quick Response,' 'Deep Research,' 'Think Deeper'), but Smart Mode could eliminate this hassle.

Powered by the Strength of GPT-5

The information that has come to light about this feature states that—'This mode will use GPT-5 to either respond quickly or perform in-depth analysis, depending on the query.' This means that the feature is not just a new option but an automated version of AI interaction.

Why is this change necessary?

Currently, model pickers have become a common feature in AI chatbots. Users have to manually select models for different use cases.

  • But with the ever-increasing options, this menu has become complex and time-consuming.
  • In February 2025, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said:

'We hate the model picker as much as you do. We want AI to work without complexity and give the user an experience of integrated intelligence.' Microsoft's new Smart Mode is an attempt to implement that same idea.

Current Status: Not Yet Available

According to reports—

  • This feature is not yet active even for beta testers.
  • TestingCatalog activated it through code and shared its video demo.
  • In it, Smart Mode appears as a new option in the dropdown.

When Might GPT-5 Arrive?

Media reports claim that:

  • OpenAI may launch GPT-5 in August 2025.
  • This model will not only bring better reasoning capabilities but will also have the integration of several tools like Canvas, Web Search, and Deep Research.
  • Mini and Nano variants of it are also likely to be released.

What Will Change for Users?

If Smart Mode is released, then—

  1. Less Manual Input: Now you won't have to decide which model to choose.
  2. Faster and More Advanced Responses: Based on your query, the AI will decide whether to give a quick answer or go into depth.
  3. Better Multi-tasking: There will be automatic smart switching in different tasks like research, coding, and general conversation.

A Big Change for the Tech Industry

This feature will not be limited to Microsoft Copilot. If it is successful, then—

  • Other AI companies may also start adopting automated model-switching technology.
  • The user experience will be more seamless.
  • Smart auto-pilot systems may replace complex menus in chatbot interfaces.
