NDA's Vice-Presidential Candidate: Radhakrishnan Nomination Set for August 21st

Following the NDA's announcement of their Vice-Presidential candidate, the India Alliance will announce its candidate today. This was discussed at the alliance meeting in Parliament House, but the opposition has not yet revealed any names.

New Delhi: Preparations are in full swing for the Vice-Presidential election of India, scheduled for September 9, 2025. The NDA has decided to field C.P. Radhakrishnan as its candidate, and the election campaign strategy is being overseen by the central leadership. In this sequence, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has contacted opposition leaders by telephone, appealing for their support for Radhakrishnan.

The NDA announced the name of its candidate on Sunday. Radhakrishnan's name was greenlit at the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Radhakrishnan is currently the Governor of Maharashtra and will be the NDA's candidate for the post of Vice-President.

Nomination and Election Process

C.P. Radhakrishnan will file his nomination papers on August 21, 2025. All the Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers of NDA-ruled states will be present at the nomination ceremony. The NDA has appointed Union Minister Kiren Rijiju as Radhakrishnan's election agent. During the election on September 9, the NDA will vote with a complete strategy. The NDA has made it clear that its goal is to get Radhakrishnan elected unopposed. For this, the party's top leadership is also keeping an eye on the opposition parties.

The India Alliance also held a meeting in Parliament House to discuss its Vice-Presidential candidate, but the opposition has not yet announced the name of any candidate. Meanwhile, Rajnath Singh contacted several opposition leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, seeking support in favor of Radhakrishnan.

Notably, the opposition's strategy is making this election interesting. It remains to be seen whether the DMK, coming from Tamil Nadu, will support or oppose Radhakrishnan. According to NDA figures, Radhakrishnan's victory is considered almost certain, but the opposition's undecided 133 MPs can change the direction of this election.

Arithmetic and Majority Status

This time, a total of 782 MPs are eligible to vote in the Vice-Presidential election, including 542 from the Lok Sabha and 240 from the Rajya Sabha. To win a majority, a candidate needs at least 392 votes. The NDA is estimated to have the support of a total of 427 MPs, while the opposition has a strength of 355 MPs. According to these figures, the situation appears b for the NDA candidate.

However, the excitement in the election may increase when the opposition's undecided 133 MPs cast their votes. This will determine whether Radhakrishnan wins unopposed or whether the contest will be tough.
