Kanpur's Nishi Gupta Secures First Rank in UP PCS J 2022

Nishi Gupta from Kanpur secured the first rank in UP PCS J 2022 despite financial difficulties. The daughter of a paan shop owner is now serving as a Civil Judge in Mahoba.

Nishi Gupta, a resident of Kanpur, secured the first rank across Uttar Pradesh in the UP PCS J 2022 examination despite financial difficulties and social pressure. Her father runs a small paan shop, which was the family's primary source of income. With limited financial resources, Gupta continued her education using her elder sister's old books and eventually secured a place in the state's judicial services.

Nishi Gupta grew up in a modest family in Kanpur. Her father ran a paan shop to support the household, and limited income often made it difficult to arrange money for her education. She completed her early schooling at a Hindi-medium school in Kanpur.

Interested in studying from an early age, Gupta aspired to build a career in the legal profession. However, no one in her family had previously studied law, leaving her without any direct guidance about the field.

After completing school, she enrolled at Allahabad University, where she obtained her LLB and LLM degrees. Having studied in Hindi, she initially faced difficulties understanding English legal terminology. She worked separately to improve her English language skills and gradually became more comfortable with legal concepts and terminology.

Alongside her academic challenges, Gupta also faced pressure from relatives who repeatedly advised her father to arrange her marriage. Her elder sister had married at the age of 23, leading some family members to believe that Nishi should also get married at an early age.

However, her father wanted his younger daughter to complete her education and achieve her career ambitions before considering marriage. Despite hearing criticism from relatives, he continued to support her studies and ensured that she had the opportunity to pursue her goals.

Preparing for judicial service examinations was another financial challenge for Gupta. Her family could not afford to purchase new books for every subject. As a result, she relied on her elder sister's old books for preparation.

She repeatedly studied subjects she found difficult and focused on regular practice. She also prepared with a study partner, which helped her maintain consistency in her studies.

Gupta appeared not only for judicial service examinations in Uttar Pradesh but also for examinations in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. On several occasions, she reached the interview stage but could not secure final selection. In some examinations, she missed the selection list by just one mark.

Despite repeated setbacks, she continued preparing for judicial service examinations. After every examination, she reviewed her mistakes and devoted additional time to subjects in which she had scored fewer marks.

Gupta believes that three key elements are essential for success in judicial service examinations: repeated revision of studied subjects, retaining the information and reproducing it accurately in the examination. She describes this approach as the 3R method, comprising Repetition, Retention and Reproduction.

After years of preparation and multiple unsuccessful attempts, Gupta secured the first rank across Uttar Pradesh in the UP PCS J 2022 examination.

Her achievement marked a significant milestone for her family, particularly her father, who had continued supporting her education despite social pressure and financial limitations.

Gupta's journey to judicial service was shaped by her academic efforts and preparation. Neither did she come from a family with a judicial background nor did she have an established support system in the legal profession. She relied on her education and sustained preparation to secure her position in the judicial services.

According to official records of the Allahabad High Court, Nishi Gupta is serving as a Civil Judge (Junior Division) and Judicial Magistrate in Mahoba district.

Her journey from a financially constrained family in Kanpur to securing the first rank in UP PCS J 2022 highlights the circumstances she faced during her education and judicial service preparation.

Her father continued to prioritise her education despite pressure from relatives, while Gupta persisted through financial difficulties and repeated examination setbacks before achieving her goal.
