OpenAI has taken steps to move ChatGPT beyond being just a chatbot. The company has hired Glen Coates, former senior official at Shopify, signaling preparations to develop ChatGPT into a platform akin to an operating system.

ChatGPT Operating System Plan: OpenAI recently appointed Glen Coates as Head of App Platform, who will now report to Nick Turley, Head of ChatGPT. This appointment comes as the company seeks to evolve ChatGPT into a digital platform where third-party apps can function. While the company hasn't officially confirmed this, Coates' platform development experience and his role suggest that OpenAI is working on a strategy to advance ChatGPT with operating system-like capabilities.

Preparing to Build ChatGPT into an Operating System

OpenAI recently hired Glen Coates, who has been appointed Head of App Platform. Coates will be responsible for bringing significant changes to the ChatGPT platform. This hiring is believed to be linked to a plan to develop ChatGPT as an operating system.

Although OpenAI has not made any official statement regarding this, Coates’ experience and his new role demonstrate the company’s serious intent in this direction. Reporting to Nick Turley, Head of ChatGPT, Coates will be involved in key decisions related to platform development.

From Shopify to OpenAI

Glen Coates previously worked at Shopify as Vice President and Head of Product. He announced his joining of OpenAI on social media platform X and indicated that he would help in the process of transforming ChatGPT into an operating system.

His experience in building large digital platforms is considered valuable for OpenAI. Experts believe that this move demonstrates that OpenAI now wants to develop ChatGPT as an open app ecosystem where third-party apps can easily function.

Focus on AI Devices and App Integration

Discussions surrounding ChatGPT have intensified as OpenAI is also working on a new AI device. This device is expected to launch in 2027. Notably, the company is collaborating with former Apple designer Jony Ive on its design.

Alongside this, app integration features have already begun in ChatGPT. With the addition of third-party apps like Spotify and Canva, users can now listen to music, edit images, and manage documents directly within ChatGPT. These changes are strengthening ChatGPT as a platform.
