Parliament Disrupted: Kharge Demands Voter List Revision Discussion, Nadda Cites Schedule

Mallikarjun Kharge Demanded Discussion on Voter List Revision (SIR) in Bihar in Rajya Sabha. JP Nadda Rejected it, Citing the Schedule. Parliament Proceedings Disrupted by Opposition's Uproar.

Rajyasbha: Both Houses of Parliament witnessed a stalemate on Thursday regarding the Bihar Voter List Revision, i.e., SIR (Special Summary Revision). The opposition created a ruckus in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on this issue, disrupting the proceedings. The Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned, first until 12 noon, then until 2 pm, and finally for the entire day. A similar situation unfolded in the Rajya Sabha.

Kharge Demanded Discussion on SIR

The Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and Congress President, Mallikarjun Kharge, demanded that the government hold an immediate discussion on the SIR issue in the House. He stated that the country is going through a dangerous phase, and at such a time, the government and the opposition should work together in the national interest. Kharge said that the opposition is ready to discuss and find solutions with the government, but the government must first allow the discussion.

Nadda Cited the Schedule

Following Kharge's demand, Ghanshyam Tiwari, a member of the panel of Deputy Chairmen, gave an opportunity to JP Nadda, the National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, to respond. JP Nadda said that the proceedings of the House run according to a fixed schedule and changes are not possible. He clarified that the functioning of the House would proceed as per the scheduled program.

Bill Introduced and Passed, Proceedings Adjourned

Amid the uproar, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal introduced the Coastal Vessel Transport Bill 2025 in the Rajya Sabha for consideration. A brief discussion was held on this bill, in which members of the NDA and YSR Congress Party participated. After only 33 minutes of discussion, the bill was passed. Immediately after this, Ghanshyam Tiwari, a member of the panel of Deputy Chairmen, announced the adjournment of the proceedings for the day.

Opposition Said - Government is Evading the Issue

The opposition is angry over the non-discussion on SIR in the Rajya Sabha. Opposition MPs say that the government is avoiding a sensitive issue, and this is a worrying situation for democracy. The opposition argues that when the government claims that it is ready to answer every question, then why is it avoiding discussion on a serious subject like SIR?
